Colposcopy tomorrow...

As it says, I have a colposcopy booked for tomorrow.

2 weeks ago I went to have the coil fitted and my GP found a polyp and a 'fleshy mass' on the neck of womb. So no coil and GP said she'd request a quick appointment.

I've had a polyp removed about 7 years ago, so no biggie there. However the mass is worrying me. My GP said they'd probably do a biopsy.

Those that have had this procedure, how were you afterwards? Were you ok to go to work afterwards? How
Sore is it?

I am putting a brave face on, but I'm nervous. I'm cleaning everything in sight, ironing the lot, to take my mind of it. Unheard of on a Sunday evening chez Mogwi.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I've had several colonoscopies and none of them were as bad as the prep beforehand. I don't know about your hospital but I had 48hrs of drinking vile drinks and sitting on the loo.
I've not had sedation on any of the times I've had them and been fine throughout. So, I can't account for how you'd be after aedation - you can't drive etc, so I wouldn't think you could work for 48hrs or so. The procedure last about 30/40 mins and I was just chatting to the nurses about telly programmes etc, anything to keep me distracted. It's uncomfortable, but not painful as no nerve endings inside bowel.

Hi thanks for the reply. Think this is different procedure though as will be examination of my cervix and possibly a biopsy.

i had several of these its a bit like a smear but they have camera so they can see better they put a type of liquid on your cervix so it shows up any abnormal cells. if they take a biopsy its like a small nail clipper and they take a bit of skin to be sent of. the biopsy for me was the only painfull part but they put a paste straight on to stop the bleeding you will be fine after and its really just like a smear a little uncomfortable but fine after. xx

I've had a few colposcopies. They really weren't that sore (or more sore than a smear). When they did a biopsy they just asked me to cough and it was done. I didn't feel the camera or anything else they were doing and it was all over very quickly. Hope you get on ok tomorrow

Until I get there I don't know what will be happening which is why I'm googling like a good 'un - bad idea!

My GP said she thinks they will do a biopsy of the mass, so I'll have to see what happens. I've read old threads on here and some women said they had a local anaesthetic.

i didn't have the anesthetic id ask before in case they don't offer it you. honestly tho the whole procedure is ok just like a smear. good luck op. xx

The colposcopy is fine! No worse than a smear test.

I've had a couple of these treatments too - as pp has said, it isn't painful as such, just uncomfortable and takes a bit longer than a normal smear. I had a local anaesthetic both times.

The first time I went there was just 1 nurse, the 2nd time there were 2 - 1 for me and 1 for the doctor and they were both lovely. The 2nd time "my" nurse spoke to me the whole way through and told me what was happening, made sure I was comfortable, etc.

Immediately after the treatment they offered me a cup of tea and suggested I wait for 10-15 minutes before driving, however I hadn't parked at the hospital so left straight away as I thought a walk in the fresh air would be better for me. I was fine to drive home half an hour later and went back to work the next day.

I did get asked if I wanted to watch the procedure on the monitor which I politely declined - apparently this makes me strange as lots of people do!

I had a local anasthetic for mine, and I wish they'd told me it contained adrenaline as I have an anxiety disorder and am prone to panic when I get an adrenaline rush! As it was I just didn't understand why I suddenly felt so scared when nothing at all scary had actually happened. Then they mentioned the adrenaline and I was fine again, realising there was an external reason for my raised heartrate, sweaty palms etc, it wasn't just me!

Best bit of a colposcopy is that you get to see your own vagina, magnified about 100 times, on a big TV screen

I don't think anything during mine hurt at all, the worst bit was not being allowed to use tampons or a mooncup for a while afterwards which meant I had to do a whole period using sanitary towels, which I haven't touched since I was about 14.

I cycled home on my bike.

Hello all, have just got back from the hospital.

It was all ok, apparently it was a blocked follicle that had swollen, making it red and angry looking. No polyp or mass, thank god.

I did look on the screen, as did DP. He has assured me he's not put off me for life now .

Very sore tho now, like bad period pains. Feeling a bit delicate as they were poking around for ages and squeezed the hideous follicle thingy.

Very relieved now however, as I had been worrying.

Oh wow I didn't know there were folicles on cervixes! Glad it went ok and wasn't anything serious. Hope the pains ease up, ibuprofen might help as the poking may have made it inflammed, plus of course you are entitled to sit on a sofa throne and demand chocolate, wine etc be brought to you at whim.
