dd2 just slammed door shut on ds's fingers

3 of them. They are all bleeding but the one looks quite squashed/dented too, it's really obvious.

Is it likely it is broken ??

Yikes! Owwee! Think a trip to A&E might be called for to get them properly strapped up, but they may not be broken, little fingers are quite tough.

Well, is ds still upset and complaining of much pain? If not, then I think it would be okay to leave and observe. I'm sorry I don't know his age, but can he waggle them, make a fist, make a 'claw' etc, or is it too painful. How different to his other hand does it look?

And where are you geographically?

can you put a cold cloth on them? poor boy

if you have a local minor injuries place - normally they can deal with something like this

He is 3, still crying saying they hurt and won't wigglle them, dunno if thats cos of pain or that he just doesn't want too.

Will try and get hold of xp.

We have badge clinic thing at the local hospital, not sure wether u just turn up or what though.

Let us know how you get on. If you are anywhere near Coventry I will come and get you and take you to A&E if necessary.

You can't just turn up at Badger, nutty - you have to ring them first. Can't remember the number offhand but if you ring your GP's surgery they will have the number.

Thanks annie, but am nowhere near.

Have just had him sit with his hand in water and he has calmed down a bit. I asked him to wiggle his fingers again and he does but the worst one only seems to be moving a bit and at the bottom, he won't bend it i don't think.

Sounds like it could be broken - crush fracture or something like that my ds2 had that when ds1 slammed the door on his toe. I think you should get it checked out when you can. They will just steri strip and bandage it, not much else you can do. Have you given him some painkiller (calpol)? I know how ds2 cried. Sorry you haven't got transportation. I'm sure once the shock goes the pain will subside too.

I think you need to get him to the hospital. Can you get a taxi rather than wait for xp to come and pick you up?

Ok he did just bend it slightly but not as much as other fingers. He just seems to be holding that finger different if that makes any sense.

He might just be nervous in case it hurts him. See if you can watch him surreptitiously (sp?) to see if he's moving them. Poor little mite. If you aren't taking him to A&E, if he calms down, give him some calpol or something too (ibuprofen/nurofen would be good as anti inflammatory).

Dd1 is managing to make him laugh now.

I'd say, before you rush off to hospital:

  1. Give him a drink (orange juice or whatever his preferred flavour is) that'll calm him down and replace the big adrenaline rush he's just had. (see if he voluntarily holds the cup in the poorly hand too)

  2. Give him some calpol or childrens nuerofen. This will take away some of the swelling, and stop a bit of the pain. I know alot of people don't like to take anything, especially if they are off to the hospital as it may mask the pain, but I've been told by an A&E nurse that if a painkiller has been taken it reduces the swelling slightly and makes it easier for them to examine you. Also, your DS may then bend his fingers.

  3. Keep a cold compress on them for as long as he'll allow.

After all this see how he is and then reconsider if you need the A&E again. Hope you don't!

I'd leave it a while too tbh. Ds1 did this a couple of weeks ago and was fine after a bit of tlc.

Dd2 is most definatly in hiding LOL

He seems alot better. I am watching him and he is using it but is aware of it iykwim.

Myy DD1 did the same to DD2 once.
I had to open the door to get her fingers released!
They looked mangled and squished but nurse at gp's said to just keep an eye on the fingers and check she could move them.
She was fine.
Hope your ds is ok.

A broken bone is usually obviously mis-shaped and held at a funny angle. If there's some movement it's probably not broken but it's likely to be bruised and sore, so cold compress/pain relief is your best bet in the first instance.

I think they are ok. I watched him playing and he seems to be bending it ok now although is still holding his hand out so it must be sore.

If i am still unsure in the morning I will try and get a g.p appointment.
