any reason for having 'sugar free' medication?

i have just been prescribed drops FOr oral thrush for dd (5 weeks) and noticed on the way to the chemist it said sugar free in brackets. now i'm home, i see the drops i've been given arent sugar free. is there any reason she should have to have sugar free - i would have thought that they would contain sweeteners which wouldnt be so good for her, personally i would prefer natural sugar but dont want give her them if there might be a problem.

i'm a bit confused!

I prefer the full sugar versions too, rather than the sugar-free ones, which as you say are full of artificial sweeteners. I can't see any reason why there would be a problem with it being the full-sugar kind.

I like the full sugar meds for my two. If they are poorly enough to need the meds then they can bliming well have the sugar.

My dd has had the drops with sugar and without (just depends what the chemist has in I think) and they both taste grim to me but she loved them!

It really annoys me that they seem to think that aspartame is preferable to sugar!

we get the sugared versions too - there are some medicines (can't remember which ones now) which are much thicker with sugar in and I found that both mine preferred the sweetened version because it was thinner (iyswim). But stuff like calpol - we always get the sugared one.

definitely for the full sugar stuff. the other stuff is PACKED FULL of nasties and chemicals, sure to be banned in a few years i bet.

never buy 'sugar free' things because it means it's packed full of something much worse than sugar!

Agree, with kids. Though I suppose its good to have a choice, in case of diabetes or other reactions to sugar. Wish they'd use that new sweetener stuff (gone blank on name) instead of aspartame though

For me, I prefer non-sugar ones if they're the kind I might need to take during the night - eg Remegel (live off them right now) or Pepcid. Hate to think what state my teeth will be in by the end of this pregnancy!

Though wouldn't take Aspartame in pg anyway, come to think of it. Ah well, reflux or rot - no contest.

A diabetic friend always went for sugar free because it made calculating his insulin easier. But other than that I can't see why.

I was reading in Practical Parenting the other day that artificial sweeteners are banned in food products that are marketed for children under 3. So strictly speaking, shouldn't sugar free meds also only be for children over 3?

BTW, I had to take calpol a couple of months back for a raging headache (had no paracetamol in and am pg so couldn't take anything else. Worked out I needed 8 teaspoons to make up the equivalent of an adult dose but I couldn't take it. I was gagging after 3 spoons and just managed to swallow a 4th. It was the most vile stuff I've ever eaten, all I could taste was sweeteners and fake flavouring. Made me question wheteher or not to give it to the kids again.

Disgusting, isn't it? I've done the same - with Calpol, and Medised. Also made me realize how strong the Medised was, so cut down on doses I'd give dd.

have you seen the Dr. Greenfinger's range of medicines? they are all 100% natural - no nasties at all. cough soother syrup is fantastic (lots of honey!)

I always go for the full sugar stuff if available. I've also been searching for a sweetener free omega fish oil supplement for kids. The expensive eye-Q one is the best but the other brands contain sweeteners. The boots own brand even contained hydrogentaed veg oil. Crazy!
