Lower back pain and the Mirena Coil

Since having my Mirena coil fitted about 7 months ago I have been suffering from severe lower back pain. I am also getting migraines at around the time of my period each month and I seem to constantly hungry - do you think these thing could be related to my coil.

My Mirena has been in for 3 months and I also have lower back pain but Im prone to this anyway.I am constantly hungry and my IBS is so bad Im having the coil removed tomorrow.I feel dreadful, cant wait to get it out.

Hi Lushaddict Good luck for tomorrow keep me posted, it will be interesting to see how you feel after you have had it removed, as I am seriously considering having mine removed as well

Scrummy...had it removed yesterday.It actually was more painful than having it put in but they were different doctors.I feel WONDERFUL.My boobs stopped hurting today, they have been sore for the last 2 months.The most amazing thing is my IBS has calmed dramatically,no tummy pain at all.Thats not to say it wont be there tomorrow as you never know.
I made the best decision.Cannot yet tell if my appitite has calmed as I had to have a Twix on the way home from work today!!

Hi Lush I'm glad you are feelin better, sounds as though you did the right thing, have decided to make an appointment at the doctors this week to talk about getting this bloody thing out, the more I research the more horror stories I am hearing. I am still having terrible lower back pains and for the last two days I have been bleeding even though my period finished last week. I never had any of these problems before I had the Mirena. Any thoughts on changing to another coil are are you put off for life!! Scrummy...

Have you had your coil checked to make sure it is still in the correct position? If it slips you can get pain. I had what felt like terrible period pains when mine slipped partly through my cervix. However I had another one fitted as I had no other side effects and that one was fine. I didn't find having my coils removed too bad. You might feel a bit of cramping for a few seconds but it's over in less than a minute. Can't really offer any advice on alternatives as I haven't got on very well with any other methods except condoms which are a bit of a faff but save a bit of mess!

Hi..Oh my this is amazing I thought I was going mad with these horrid side effects. I had the marina fitted about two half years ago a fibroid removed and 360 degree lazer treatment at same time. At first all ok then weight gain started and can't shift (I have read you weight gain comments which I can relate to 100 percent) and now my coil has moved and another fibroid has grown ....as for back pain it is sooo bad when I walk. My doc's have said can't remove because fibroid in way...but I can't take it anymore so off to doc's again tomorrow to try again...I can't wait to get it out. Thank you so much for sharing all you points at least I know I'm not imagining it x

Hi there, so relieved reading your post. I got the mirena coil in 1yr6months ago. It totally stopped my periods which is great as I had extremely heavy bleeds. Since then I have suffered from continuous lower back pain a regularly my back goes into spasms. The pain is excruciating! And I honestly can’t cope with the spasms anymore. I’m exercising, taking vitamins etc etc but having no relief and am honestly at the end of my tether. After reading your post I’m just wondering now if it could be the coil that is causing the back pain and spasms? I wonder if anyone else has suffered from lower back spasms pain? Thankyou so much xx

@ClaireB96 This is a very old thread, but it came up on my feed as you’ve asked for advice. All I can add is that I’ve had the mirena coil for 4 months now. For the last 2 months, I’ve had back problems. My lower back seems very unstable and weak, especially if I’m bleeding and I’m finding I get a stiff back very easily now. I too have wondered if it’s linked to the hormonal change. I read a sports article that said women are more prone to back injuries when doing training or sport at certain points in their menstrual cycle. So it is very likely the coil can affect our muscles. Maybe speak to your gp if it continues.

Hi ladies, so glad to read this thread! Was really concerned about my persistent back pain (amongst other issues like digestion/bloating/anxiety) I’ve pretty much decided the mirena coil has done nothing good for me other than making my periods a bit lighter and stopping me getting pregnant.
Would love to know how quickly people felt “normal” after having it removed??

I had my mirina removed on Tuesday I'd had it in 7 years and decidedto have a break as think im peri menopausal.
It was 7 years ago I started with lower back pain, I didn't put 2 and 2 together as at the time I moved house so I put my back pain down to that. I've not been able to lie on my back in bed or stand up in my kitchen and cook a meal for 7 years without excruciating lower back pain, to the extent I had to buy a stool to perch on. Today is the first day I've not had to use my stool to cook a meal. I can't believe it no pain! Obviously it's only early days but I'm excited to see of this has resolved my back pain issue. 😊

I know this is an old post, bit I'm so glad i cMe across it. I had the coil fitted 4 months ago and the day after having it fitted I have nothing but issues. I have been suffering for lower back ache now since having it fitted but put it down to just general aches and pains. The only bit I like about it is that it has stopped my really heavy periods, but with all the other issues im not sure if I should have it removed

I know this is an old thread but a month after mirena coil insertion and im struggling with lower back pain (it’s in the right place!) has anyone’s back pain resolved with coil after it settles or was it a case of getting it removed??

I am now almost 3 months post mirena insertion (and suffered with lower back pain constantly initially). The back pain went completely I would say about 2/3 weeks after my first post and now am getting on fine. I was told by a nurse practitioner (who fits them and had one herself) that the back pain is a settling in symptom for some some people, and to give it 4 months before deciding whether to stick with it or not. She said you really don’t know until then. People seem to fob off that back pain is associated, but I never had it before. Hopefully yours settles too.

Had my mirena in 7 months ago. No issues other than cramps and spotting to begin with. No back pain though.

Not entirely sure if it has caused the back pain....
So tricky to tell.

@Tkersh Dr looked like I was making it up when I said I couldn't stand or sit for long! It's been 2 weeks scan in just over a week to make sure all is ok, I really want to keep it as part of my HRT 🙏 it settles v.soon otherwise it's coming out!
