DEC are launching an appeal today in response to Ebola. Texting SUPPORT to 70000 gives them £5. It's on the news today.

Do they then use that number for anything else?

I don't give by text because too many charities use the numbers to solicit more. But is a big appeal, for multiple recipients, different?

Leviticus · 29/10/2014 09:00

I had a text back acknowledging the donation with options for gift aid and to stop further messages.

I've given to DEC by text before, and yes they continued to bug me. Maybe they've changed that now?

scarevola · 29/10/2014 09:03

You have to opt out of further messages?

That's enough to stop me using this means, even though it could have been so easy otherwise.

(Commenting to bump for anyone who doesn't mind).

Well you just have to send one text saying STOP. I like the text donate things because I don't have to give card details.

Agree no card is good. But still don't like having to opt out, so won't be using that system.

The govt has said it will match public donations (up to £5m)

You can do paypal on their website if that appeals more to people.

scarevola · 30/10/2014 17:59

Lenny Henry is on BBC now doing an advert for this appeal, 0370 60 60 900 or via dec.org.uk

I donated via PayPal. Can't believe how little this campaign has been publicised on tv etc.
