Some of you may know my mum has been v ill and in hospital with a mystery infection.

They have just grown their cultures and got results back and she has E Coli and Septicemia

Luckily she seems to be over the worst as they found an antibiotic that she responded to - she is still in hospital on IV antibiotics.

God knows how she got

Your poor Mum - I'm glad she's responding to the antibiotics now.

thanks martha

Is it very common do you think?

Have they told you a particular type of E Coli CD?

0157 is the nasty one which can cause kidney damage.

E Coli is normally caught from undercooked meat (usually mince products) or farm acquired infection.

AFAIK septacemia is a general name given when the infection is in the bloodstream rather than specific to one area or organ.

Glad to hear they have her on the right ABs now. I am sure she will be feeling much brighter soon.

Sorry, that isn't very clear. I meant E Coli 0157 is normally caught by those means.

E Coli in general is carried in the gut and can be a common cause of UTIs. Sometimes it can pass to the bloodstream and cause infections like your mum's.

ooh I don't know I will ask her
