conflicting advice from HVs: is it a virus or is he teething?

by accident i kept seeing the same HV for the last two months at the baby clinic. he told me that DS (now 4 months) was teething. i noticed that he was diagnosing pretty much all babies in the room with teething, so was a bit skeptical.

his symptoms were: green runny poos, blocked up nose, grumpy, not sleeping through the night anymore, feeding less, feeding twice in night rather than once, less chatty and less smiley/laughing, puts everything in his mouth, gaining weight but going down the lines on the weight chart, bad nappy rash.

today i saw a different HV and she said DS probably had a virus and is now recovering as he's less grumpy, feeding more and sleeping through most nights. she seems to think he has no signs of teething. her advice made more sense to me as i wasn't convinced he's teething. she also seems to think (though didn't say it in so many words) that the other HV is rubbish.

so was it teething or a virus?

he's fine. nappy rash is going as weird runny poos stopped. he's a lot happier, back to his usual lovely self.
