Sore throats cure

Itsfab · 25/10/2014 07:51

I started with a sore throat yesterday and it is worse today. I also have a cold. I can't be ill, the kids are all off, and I am a terrible patient as I hate feeling crap and not being able to do everything, so does anyone have something I can do or take to stop this getting worse please? I have asthma and have had my flu jab but past experience tells me the jab does not always stop be having flu.

Gargle with salt water. Boil the kettle, add some cold but keep the water as hot as you can manage it. Add 3 teaspoons of salt. Gargle 5 times every few hours.
Also vitamin C e.g. kiwi fruit, oranges or just vitamin tablets.
A cold doesn't turn into flu. They are very different viruses.

I think I just have a bad cold. I can still move so not flu. I have a head ache and just feel really grotty. I have been drinking hot honey and lemon and water as I can't gargle. Thank you very much. Such bad timing now the kids are all off.

Difflam mouth wash is very soothing. It won't kill the lurgy but it will make you feel much more comfortable along the way.

Annietheacrobat · 25/10/2014 17:50

Regular paracetamol too.

Catmint · 25/10/2014 17:53

Breathe steam as often as you can.

Littlehomebird · 25/10/2014 18:09

I once got a tip from a gp for sore throats -suck pineapple chunks. It does help.

Itsfab · 25/10/2014 21:45

I am rarely ill and when I feel grotty I am not a happy bunny. I don't do sitting still but along with a damaged hip and rib from a fall I really should be resting.

Gargle with soluble painkillers, I mix with Ribena so it tastes better

sandgrown · 25/10/2014 21:50

Get a bottle of Glycerine. Two spoonfuls in a glass of water and sip it for sore throats and coughs

Pootlingalong · 26/10/2014 07:06

Strefen lozenges, they have flurbiprofen in them. It's like ibuprofen so if you're alright taking that you should be ok with these but worth checking with the pharmacist. Or dissolve soluble aspirin in water and gargle with it, as PP said, I don't think it works with soluble paracetamol though.

Blondieminx · 26/10/2014 07:10

Or soluble co-codamol, I had that along with other drugs when I had tonsillitis with a quinsy.

Morning all

I have been banned from getting out of bed but I did sneak out to put a wash on. DH has brought me water and a hot honey and lemon. I can't gargle without throwing up so will try a Lemsip later as I still have a headache. I don't generally have a headache and feel sick with a cold so I am currently blaming the flu jab I had last week. I heard the GMB doctor say no live flu stuff - technical term - in the vaccine but I am thinking heck of a coincidence. I generally get flu every year with or without the jab so I am expecting this to turn into flu. Cant face food. Silver lining if I lose some of my fat Hmm.

It CAN'T turn into flu. A cold is a different virus entirely.

Itsfab · 26/10/2014 15:23

It came out of nowhere and I feel crap that I have decided it wasn't a cold but is flu. I have had flu three years running and I am pissed off. 2 out of three times I had the damn jab as well so what is the bloody point. I barely notice a cold. There isn't much that stops me doing my normal stuff but this has.

OP posts:
elvenbread · 26/10/2014 16:25

If you managed to get up and put a wash on then it is highly unlikely to be flu.
All colds are different. You don't usually catch the same cold virus twice so saying you don't normally notice a cold doesn't mean you won't this time.
It is cold season. The heating goes on and the cold germs spread.

FWIW (although everyone is different obviously) I get lots of colds and they make me feel pretty crap. I usually get a temperature and occasionally get a bit sicky with them. Sometimes I can function relatively normally with them and other times they floor me. I once had flu. My goodness I knew it was flu. I only moved to go to the toilet and twice I had to crawl to go to the loo as I couldn't stand up. I had a raging temperature and no amount of any medicine would make me feel better. I had cold sores all over my mouth, masses of them. I was off work for 4 days and went back on day 5 and got sent home because I was still horrendously ill. I slept for about 18 hours of every day and the rest of the day was sat in a dark room as I couldn't focus and had no inclination to do ANYTHING.

Flu is a major, major illness and it annoys me when people call a cold flu. They are completely different. I don't think I appreciated how different they were until I'd had both. Think of how many millions of people died of flu after the war. It can be a killer.

Itsfab · 26/10/2014 17:30

I knew someone would say that. I know flu can be a killer. Hence why I was given the jab given that I have asthma. I just find it highly suspicious that being completely well when I had the jab within days I am feeling shit and stuck in bed other than one escape to put a wash on.

I feel shit. I feel I have flu.

OP posts:
Itsfab · 26/10/2014 17:33

Others will disagree. Doesn't really change the fact I feel like shit and a cold to me is a sniffle and a sneeze or two.

The flu jab is not a live vaccine. It can't cause flu. It CAN cause a temperature and a slight reaction but it does not cause flu. It bugs me massively in the winter the amount of people who have 'flu'. The vast majority have a cold. If you feel that bad, get some sleep, drink plenty of water and read up on the differences between colds and flu.

Itsfab · 26/10/2014 19:13

I get it , elvenbread. I am bugging you. I am aware it is not a live vaccine.

If you can stomach it, try to gargle with strong sage tea. Manuka honey is also great, either neat or stirred into a hot lemon juice drink, but unfortunately quite expensive.

Itsfab · 28/10/2014 21:30

I have felt like an ice lolly today but now feel too hot. The cough has gone to my chest and I am never having the flu jab again. This is twice in a row I have had the jab and then felt like this.

I can't gargle but thank you for the honey suggestion. I have been having hot lemon with growse honey.
