Naproxen

I was prescribed naproxen yesterday (2x500mg a day) by our local MIU for a sprained ankle which has progressively been getting worse for about 10 days. Anyway I have taken 2 tablets (12hrs apart) and I feel completely wiped out today and constantly hungry. I slept well last night and have eaten quite a lot but all I want to do is have tea and crawl into bed. Does anyone think this is related to the naproxen or am I going down with something else??

Naproxen is just an NSAID, like a stronger form of ibuprofen, with similar side effects (slightly increased risk as is a higher dose). I'd say it's coincidental.

The rare but serious side effects of naproxen are black/tarry stools, persistent stomach/abdominal pain, vomit that looks like coffee grounds, chest/jaw/left arm pain, shortness of breath, unusual sweating, confusion, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, sudden vision changes. Seek immediate medical assistance if you have those, but hunger and lethargy are more likely to be a coincidence.

Get well soon, OP.

Thanks I had a feeling it prob wasn't the pills but just seemed coincidence.

Naproxen gave me a stomach ulcer so don't take them for too long or without food. Hope your ankle is better soon.

You can get a stomach protecting medicine omeprazole (sp) to take with it. I found it very good when my back was bad, it is good to reduce inflammation as well as pain killer. Take it for a few days to really help reduce the swelling as the effect will build up.

It is probably more likely that you slept badly and that is why you feel lethargic.

Lucjam is correct about the risks of Naproxen, but I found it made me feel nauseous if I took it without eating.

I can't take Naproxen, it gives me horrendous stomach pains even with Omeprazole. It is an excellent pain killer but very hard on your stomach. Make sure you eat something before taking it.
