Anaemic but iron count is fine?

My dad told me this week that the doctor said he is anaemic but his iron count t is fine, so the doctors are a bit unsure what is going on. They are doing a colonoscopy and other investigations.

I was Confused Surely anaemia is DEFINED as low iron? Or am I ignorant? I could to really get him to explain as he just kept repeating the same thing.

No sometimes you can have a normal haemoglobin count but low ferritin levels (stores of iron) so they put you on iron therapy that. I've had it a few times.

*for that!

Okay, I thought it might be something like that but he was insistent that his iron levels were fine, which I thought would cover the iron stores. Anyway, we'll see.

No problem. There are seperate blood tests for the iron levels and the ferritin levels, one goes in a purple top tube and the other in a yellow top tube. There might be other causes as well but ferritin is just the one i'm familiar with.
My Dad is the same at the Dr's as well, absolutely clueless! He takes my Mum with him but she's a drama llama so i have to get both versions of what's up with him and try and figure out the truth Grin
