Colonoscopy without prep?

My dad is 83 and having a colonoscopy today. He hasn't been given any instructions as to food and drink and none of that digusting glop to drink. DH has had 3 and each time he has had to drink the laxatives and spend hours on the loo.

Why would dad not be given the same stuff? Has anyone heard of this happening?

Is it definitely a colonoscopy? I had a sigmoidoscopy, which doesn't go as far up, I just had an enema for that, the nurse gave it to me an hour before the procedure.

Thanks labrat.

TBH I don't know exactly. I went to see my parents on Wednesday and mum hurried me off to one side and told me about it in a whisper as I wasn't supposed to know Hmm She just said 'a colonos..thingy... like M (my DH) had'. She didn't know any more - or couldn't remember ..the GP had mentioned 'cancer' and I think she is just in a flap. It wasn't until I rang today that I realised there was no prep going on.

It just occurred to me that maybe it's just a rectal exam for prostate - he keeps getting urnary infections due to his catheter and maybe they are checking there isn't something else going on. Might be sticking a camera up there too! DH had that as well.

Problem is the chinese whispers ...garrgghh!

Hope he's ok. The Chinese whispers are indeed a pain, I get exactly the same with my mil. It's hard to work out exactly what's going on.

I was right, it was an investigation for prostate problems. Prostate is enlaraged so he is having a scan on Thursday.
