I've had a horrendous sore throat for the past 5 days. It has worsened and I currently have to brace myself to get my painkillers down. I'm spitting my saliva into a glass as I just can't cope with the pain. I'm taking penicillin along side iberbrofen and paracetomol and throat spray which quite frankly are not working. I can't hack this pain anymore its excruciating. Anyone have any advice about remedies or of it could be something more severe? Thank you Sad

How long have you been on penicillin? You might need different antib's. Have you got any symptoms of glandular fever? I had similar symptoms to you when I caught it. I gargled soluble aspirin which helped. Also have they checked for strep A infection? Get an emergency GP appt, if you can't even swallow saliva you need to be seen again.

I've been taking penicillin for 3 days, just worried as the pain is a lot worse than it was when I went to the doctors. Night times are the worst. I can't eat. I can sip water mid day when the pain isn't so bad but do you think the doctor wkll just say let the antibiotics work? I've had a look at my tonsils with a torch and they are covered in white/yellow too is this normal?

Yes that's normal. The doctor recoiled when he saw mine last time Grin
What throat spray have you got? Difflam is good
Paracetamol - get the soluble ones, gargle with it then swallow
Keep going with the antibiotics too and finish the course

Oops forgot to say I would try gargling with the paracetamol and see if it helps, if you can't swallow saliva you need to go back to the GP as it could be quinsy

Thanks for the feedback. Had a other rough night. Still awake.
The throat spray is ultra chloraspetic aanaesthetic. I got this due to difflam.not working and to be honest its not better but I think I'm past the stage of numbing them.
I will book a doc an emergency appt this aft if no better as I guess I run the risk of becoming dehydrated. Thanks guys x
