Is it okay to go swimming just after having an ear infection?

My ds 61/2 has had an ear infection this week, diagnosed on Tuesday and is on antibiotics. He has swimming lessons on Saturdays and really really loves going. We had also promised to take him swimming on Sunday as a family on Sunday. he isnt complaining of any pain in his ears now. Can he still go.

No his eardrum didnt burst, thankfully. It has done in the passed though, but dr looked and said not.

I wouldn't risk it at all - water and bacteria could mean that the infection doesn't clear up / he gets another one immediately afterwards. I had a chronic ear infection and had to keep water out of it for 12 months for exactly that reason...

I frequently get ear infections and swimming makes mine worse. I always avoid it for a couple of weeks but that is just me!

NotABraBurningOtter · 28/09/2006 17:27

i would say no - i avoid swimming with my young ones due to infections

HOw long shoudl I wait then, he has been invited to a swimming party on 7th Oct too and would hate for him to miss it and so would he.

check with the GPs office?

SoupDragon · 28/09/2006 18:57

DS2 had an ear infection on holiday this year. I think I managed to keep his ear out of the water for about 3 days, max. He was fine and experienced no pain on the flight home 5 days after first complaining of pain and getting ABs.

I'd phone the GP and ask though. Or can you get one of those ear bandit thngys that stop water going in?
