Ear pain, but why?

Trying to figure out what is wrong with my ear as it is a sporadic/intermittent problem which comes and goes with no warning.

I've had pain in my left ear on and off all day (came on last night when I was going to bed).
No inflammation/swelling/redness
No discharge (sorry if TMI)
Pain comes when I lay/lean on the ear, or if I touch the outer ear anywhere that it 'joins' my head: tragus, earlobe and anywhere up to halfway up. If I touch the top of my ear it's fine.

I don't swim, I haven't caught or hit my ear on anything, and I haven't had any headaches/toothache.

Googling symptoms has not turned up anything that sounds like it so far. Does anyone have any idea what it may be?
