My son has one droopy eyelid (ptosis) .

When my ds3 was born we noticed that he was very late to open his eyes, especially his right eye. As the weeks passed, it was aparrent that his right lid was lower than the other. there wasn't much evidence of a crease. Also, when he looked up his lid didn't move up.
He has seen an eye specialist who said that cosmetically, he could have sugery when he is at least 4 to correct it. At the moment, I am keen for him to have it if necessary,as I worry about him being bullied at school for looking a bit different.
Does anybody elses baby/child have it or had surgery to correct it?

ooh yes he si on the waiting list. he is 4 in march.

i haev recently met someone whose son had it done -he is about 10 now. i dont htink his looks totally right but he has quite hooded eyes anyway.

ds wil have his in 5 months roughtly.
iw ill be a wuss as i have never had an op in my life so am rubbisha t illness

awww I'm sure it will be fine - when dd had her op, I was on my own and the anaethetist (lovely, lovely man) took me to one side and told me that they normally get the child to sit on a parent's lap to inhale the gas but it was very important not to look upset otherwise the child picks up on it. He then looked at me (with sort of knowing eyes!) and said 'this is why the dads normally volunteer for this bit!' - I was fine but had a little cry in the loo afterwards. It's all over so quickly - they don't like keeping them under for long!

the nurses etc. are so wonderful at hospital, they make you feel like it's a walk in the park (and it made me feel awful for people who have to watch their kids go through lots and lots of ops).

he's such a looker your boy anyway - droppy eyelid or not!

Thanks for replying It's so nice to hear from people whose chidren have it. My ds is five months now. I have been really worked up about it. Have had PND as a result. Feeling better now though.
Was your'e ds monitered carefully by the orthoptist?

How bad does it have to be before they consider operating? They say it is mild to moderate.
Was it a tough deciding to put him through it?
The eye specialist said if it needed doing we could always wait until he could decide for himself.
I think school is such a cruel place. If I can protect him, it's worth putting him through it.
Sorry for lots of questions.

oh god it int he grand scheme of htings is not the worst prob your boy can have.

I have this.. It is my left eye. It gets worse when I am tired or pissed (or both). My two have it. It isn't such a big thing (it isn't that marked in any of us) and we have left it alone.

I feel so much better about it now. When in the depths of PND, it was blown very much out of preportion.

Was your'e ds monitered carefully by the orthoptist? - yes every 6 weeks lot s of eye tests he lOVEs doign them. they detected a tiny bit of short sight in hsi droopy eye so has had patches for 6 months htt improved it a lot - only 4 hours a day. they woudl never have psotted this unless he was under the orthoptist, he now dwill not need glasses as a result.

ah well welcome!
ds3s is very obvious but as they grow up you get used to it adn also there is more going on than just a baby to gawp at. new popel dont often ask - when he was tiny i'd tell them straight away but now if i dont knwo them then it doesnt matter what they think really.
his patches were far more noticabela dn he was a troopper at that ( or a pirate)

re surgery - yes only in the last few months have poepl his age noticed - NO ONE ever mentioned it before - kids may be cruel abut at that age they are quite accepting i.m.e

My dd also has bilateral ptosis
As it does not affect her vision, we are leaving it for her to make up her mind about when she is older
FWIW I do not think hers is so bad but it does get worse when she is tired

Just as a matter of intrest,when it's mainly cosmetic. Can you have it done on the NHS or do you have to pay?

We were offered it on the NHS if we wanted it, we chose to defer.
DD has other visual problems and will most likely require other surgery at some point
Had ptosis bene the only thing, we might have gone for the surgery.

yes on the nhs. luckily our local joint hasa top dog man dfor eye surgery as its a plascic surgery specialised place.
