At least I think it was a spider... Was bitten on Sunday on the ankle and it is horribly swollen, sore and itchy. Taking piriton, antibiotics and hydro cortisone cream as prescribed by GP and it appears to be getting bigger by the hour. Have a yucky photo if it will help- can anyone advise please? It's really bothering me Sad

R u in the UK? We don't have any spiders that bite here. Sounds like an infected mosquito bite maybe. If it is getting worse I would go back to Dr

NeatFreak · 01/10/2014 18:25

I was told that most spiders can bite but the majority aren't poisonous but I could well be wrong...

If it's getting bigger that quickly and you've taken anti histamines, go to a and e. There are one or two spiders that can bite in this country.

Oh how odd .. I have had exactly the same thing happen to me. Was bitten on Sunday. Wasn't anything flying around at the time. And I think it was a spider as I was wearing trainer type shoes so had to be able to climb into the shoe. I do react to most bites but this got HUGE. I ended up at Drs last night and she has given me antibiotics and stronger anti histamines. She said its infected. Feel very "coldy" today so hopefully my body is fighting the infection

We most certainly do have spiders that bite in this country. DH was bitten by some sort of funnel web and said it was like an electric shock.
Anyway I would go to gp and have it checked out although I would have thought antihistamines was the way to go

NeatFreak · 01/10/2014 20:10

Thanks all. I did see my Gp who said it was infected and gave me antibiotics etc. I rested it for a while and it seemed to go down but is now swollen again as I'm up and about so think I will wait until the morning and reassess then. It's itchy and painful and the skin around it feels really hard and almost fibrous of that makes sense...
Reason I think it was a spider was because ds was sitting beside me, saw one on his lap, screamed, brushed it under the table and almost instantly I felt a bite Shock

I was bitten by something on the ankle in 2012. I did not see what it was but the after effect was similar to a very painful, itchy nettle sting.
The next day it had swollen up to my calf and couldn't bend my ankle joint.

It was diagnosed as Cellulitis being an infection caused by the bite.
I took ABs and AHs and it went in 10 days leaving conspicuous double fang bite holes. Shock.
People thought it must be a spider bite - GP had no idea.

The leg was very itchy and hot.

NeatFreak · 01/10/2014 21:42

Funnily enough I have just had a proper look after slathering it in hydro cortisone and I can definitely see fang marks... Dh scoffed until he saw them too!

Funnel web? Not in the UK. Funnel web can (rarely) be fatal.

Katisha · 01/10/2014 21:47

You're right. Not a funnel web. It was a tube web.

Behoove · 01/10/2014 21:48

Hope it hasn't laid anything in there.
Pic?

I have a scar at the bottom of my shin from a spider bite when I was a child, it blistered and was all pussey for over a week. Yuk.

Boobsofsteel · 01/10/2014 21:48

This happened to me, twas gross and painful.

Try putting an ice cold compress (frozen peas in a tea towel) on it. If that doesn't work then A+E

NeatFreak · 01/10/2014 21:58

It has gone down quite a bit now so hopefully the last dose of piriton and antibiotics has got it under control. Will see how it is when I wake up and take it from there
This photo was earlier today- it actually got worse than this!

Only1scoop · 01/10/2014 22:42

My neighbour was bitten by a spider on her hand last year she ended up in hospital ....swelling was awful.

Behoove · 01/10/2014 23:59

Ouch! Poor you. Flowers
The spiders are huge and nasty this year

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/10/2014 10:34

We definitely have spiders that bite, in fact the majority do according to the doctor that treated me for my bastard bite that took 6 weeks to go! It was awful,OP you haves my sympathyThanks Brew

SwanneeKazoo · 02/10/2014 11:04

Spiders do bite but no native species are venomous to humans. It could have been a horsefly or a wasp or maybe a hornet.
