DS is ill (again) nasty cough, cold - nightmare!

What the hell can I do to help a miserable, sobbing 13 month old feel better? He has horrid cough that makes him cry and is snotty. He just sits on my lap and cries inconsolably.
No rash. No fever (although he does feel a bit warm to the touch). Also has a very small sore in the corner of his mouth iykwim.

We have:
Benylin for tickly coughs
Medised
Neurofen
Calpol
Sudafed decongestant plug-in
Olbas oil

Have just had a phone call at work from DH - could hardly hear him for ds wailing on his lap .

Oh the poor love, that sounds so miserable for both of you...

Brings back memories of dd's first non-bfing winter. I think cuddles, Baby Einstein videos, trips in the car (to help napping), or in the buggy wrapped up warm (for distraction purposes, for both of us) and Medised at night were our best friends.

Also a humidifier, once we had the heating on.

If his cough is deep as opposed to tickly, an expectorant might be helpful? Loosen it all up, IYSWIM? It hurst less then - we used a Tixylix one, but don't give it to him just before a sleep or he'll have increased post-nasal drip.

DD2 has this, very grumpy, we are using Medised (in hope that it will make her sleep) also using Neurofen.

If he stays inconsolable, or cries harder when you lie him down, might be worth doctor visit to check ears - the one time dd really really cried during a cold was when she was starting an ear infection, 'cos it hurts.

Is he better with Calpol?

He had calpol yesterday evening and it seemed to make things a bit better, he was still a bit easily upset, but not as miserable. He gets upset at being put down whether it is sitting or lying, he just wants cuddles, and even they don't really work.

I really hope it isn't another ear infection...

Oh well, have to leave work early ( again...maybe it is just ds's conspiracy to make me give up work all together!) to get home so DH can go to work tonight (has already cancelled this afternoons work...) will arrive armed with tixylix and put brightly coloured, singalong televisionprogrammes on for him... [hopeful]

medised is fantastic for getting them to stay asleep!
have you tried raising one end of the cot and definitely use a humidifier. They make a massive difference.

It might actually be teething you know - my daughter always gets a terrible cough when she is teething and no one gets any sleep. the pharmacist said it is from excess mucus trickling into her throat at night. at least you know it will pass...

Hmmm he has been DRIBBLING. A LOT. As in the his t-shirt is soaked through and has to be changed.

well if you think it is teething, then definitely raise one end of the cot, calpol (better than medised for teething i found), and have you tried the homeopathic teething granules? they are called "TEETHA" you get them in Boots, they are just camomile and are good at calming them a bit.
I went through this just 2 weeks ago (dd is 1 on sunday) so i really sympathise, but it will go away as quickly as it came. Her top 2 teeth have now broken through and she is back to being a happy baby again.

I found baby nurofen best for teething, 'cos its anti-inflammatory. But Calpol helped a bit too.

Dribbling can be because of sore throats, common at start of a nasty cold...but either way, painkillers should help. THose one year old winters are the pits, I feel for you!
