Gappy front teeth

I'm not sure if I should be posting here or in style and beauty but it is a sort of dentistry question. I have got gaps starting to appear between my front teeth and the 2 on either side due to gum erosion (old age, literally getting long in the tooth..sob..) My teeth are quite big and it is making me feel self self conscious about them.
I am wondering whether to have cosmetic bonding to fill in the gappy space. My dentist has said it can be done but will alter the 'profile' of the tooth- whatever that means- I have seen the result on crooked teeth and it looked great but wondered if anyone here has had experience of 'gap filling'. The bonding is apparently put straight on to the teeth so the dentist has to be quite 'artistic' when applying it.
Any advice welcome!
