Copper coil V Mirena

Hi I'm about to embark on having a coil for the first time.
Copper V Mirena ?
It's a tricky one . I don't mind periods as this usually tells me I'm not pregnant. Any thoughts on which us best? Comments very welcome.

Hey, I've had my mirena out just under 3 months and now I've just found out I am pregnant - only 3 weeks but I am soooo excited! I was fine with mirena I had it for over 10 years and didn't get the monthly visit from auntie Flo however I understand some people still get a period with this. I am Definately going back to this after my pregnancy. I've never used a copper one so can't comment but they reckon the average woman spends £5 a month on sanitary protection so a saving of £60 a year too! X

Well I've had a copper coil for 2 1/2 years and I really like it. I chose it because I was fed up of hormonal contraception and the effects it had on my weight and moods. It makes my periods slightly heavier but that's the only slight downside. It late for 10 years and I can just forget about it really.

Thanks Lexie. Do you get periods with the copper coil? Also I'm a bigger girl (size 16-18) and put on weight very easily, do you think the copper coil would be better for me than the mirena? X

I have a copper coil and am very happy with it. Hormonal contraception didn't agree with me. Periods were very heavy for the first year but I've always had heavy periods and it has calmed down now.

The copper coil is likely to make you period heavier but doesn't have any hormones. The mirena will add good as stop periods (I do get occasional spotting) but contains hormones, which some associate with mood swings and weight gain.

I'm on my 2nd mirena and love it, but I have really heavy periods when not on hormonal contraception so copper coil was a big no for me. I also haven't noticed any issues with the hormones in the Mirena despite having a horrendous time on the pill.

I think it depends on your properties really and what your current periods are like. I do think s lot of people who opt for the mirena do so because of heavy periods.

I'm on my second copper coil, having had the first out to have a baby and then got another put back in after the birth. I am not a fan of hormonal contraception as I believe it increases my appetite so the copper coil is ideal for me. My periods are slightly heavier but not unmanageably so.

I had the cooper coil for years. Periods were a lot heavier but I can't do hormones so it was ideal for me. Highly recommend it. I would have it again.

Has anyone had copper coil fitted before they had children? Was it very painful?
