Lochia - 5 weeks on and it's started being fresh red blood again?

Hi. Don't know if anyone else had same but I though I would post on here before I try and make an appointment at the doctors.

Had my 2nd child 5 weeks ago. I had 3 weeks of bleeding, which gradually turned brown and then stopped. However, 3 days later, started again but this time was fresh red blood. I assumed that this was my first period and didn't give it any more thought. However, 9 days later am still getting lots of fresh bleeding and after consulting my Miriam Stoppard book, found that one explanation could be that the placenta site is not healing properly and advice is to have a rest for a couple of days. Sounds nice, but obviously not practical for the real world with a 3yr old and a 5 week old newborn!!! I'm not due to see my doctor for my 6 week check up for another two weeks.

Just wondered if anyone else had any experience of this or if I am just worrying for nothing. I didn't have anything like this with my first.

5 weeks is a long time sarah.

mine stopped at 2 weeks for a few days and then abruptly started gushing again but had completely stopped by 5 weeks.

i'd definitely get the gp to check you over as it sounds worrying

Not entirely sure either but you aren't alone. I hate to put it so ickly but mine's a bit stinky too (sorry if tmi!)

My 6 week apt isn't till halfway through october... (believe dd will be nearly 8 or 9 weeks!)

my post birth blood lose went on for about 8 weeks.
The lochia didn't actually stop before my fisrt period arrived and I couldn't have my 6 week check until around 9 weeks abcause I was stil bleeding.

I spent a bloody fortune on sanitiary towels, i can tell you!!

i was told it could last up to six weeks sarah - phone your hv and ask if you should be concerned.

Please go and get it checked. Could be infection, or a little piece of placenta left behind. You could phone the post natal ward and talk to a midwife there.
