Vit B12

I have been recovering from a major op 5 months ago and still feeling v tired, have hair loss, am very forgetful and have had tinnitus for 3 months. I have been on iron tablets and Vit D for a while but am not quite right. As part of a test for my iron my B12 was measured. It was 225. Although this is above the lower limit I have read that it should be between 400-500. Is this something I should be raising with my Doctor.

Does anyone have any experience of low B12 and any advice?

TIA

Yes, that does sound low, although I think ranges can vary and anything over 300 is sometimes seen as ok. Has your thyroid also been checked?

You may find that your GP is not interested in a B12 result that comes within the reference range. However, it does need to be over 500 really for good health, and it is easy and effective to supplement with cublingual lozenges that you can buy from Amazon.

As for your thyroid, never accept the bald statement that results are 'normal' . There is a lot of difference between normal and optimal and for many doctors, 'normal' just means within the reference range. You're entitled to a copy of your results, with the reference ranges and it's a good idea to ask for this as a matter of course.

Hi, Thanks RockingD. I agree they are not that interested but am thinking of trying again. My thyroid results were
Serum TSH level 2.08
Free Thyroxine 17.

They have told me these are fine. Does anyone have any views on these?

My problem with taking the lozenges is that I am on Warfarin and not allowed to take any medication without clearing with the pharmacist or doctor first even Over the counter medicines so I am told.

Hopefully it will all sort itself out soon!
