alternative remedies for sore throat/tonsillitis

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me. My little girl is 6 months and has had 4 or 5 colds already. But on the weekend after we thought the last cold had cleared she became really sleepy, hottish, off her food (so not llike her!) and coughing during a milk feed. The doctor says that she has tonsillitis and her throat's very inflamed. He's given her a course of penicillin in liquid form. He's also recommended Calpol.
I'm now getting really worried about the amount of medicine she's been taking. She's had Medised at night when she's had difficulty breathing and the odd time she has Calpol she seems to get a high and rolls and plays like mad ( which looks cute). I've heard that the Sorbitol in Calpol can have this effect. Well the penicillin liquid contains it aswell, so she's gone from lethargic to manic! Obviously I'm not going to stop the course of penicillin but does anyone know of any other forms of pain relief for her throat?
Thanks for reading

Cold jelly, ice cream and yoghurt is very soothing.
