scared I have cervical cancer ...

My mum had Ovarian cancer which ended in her having a hysterectomy and unable to have any more children. Over the last week - I have had these awful bouts of bloating. My stomach went oddly distended - even my partner said it was really really odd how large it went - and it was extremely painful. I hadn't eaten anything weird..or bad. It was so painful the last time I was writhing around on the floor.

I also missed a smear test and haven't been for a long time. Then on TV this morning they were talking about bloating and pain is a symptom of cervical cancer. I have made an appointment now to get a smear on Thursday. I'm so scared as I just have a feeling it's something bad - my biggest fear is that I won't be able to have another baby. We have one. Can't talk to anyone about it so just thought I would post on here.

I'm sure I've read that bloating from ovarian cancer doesn't come and go. HTH, it is awful feeling anxious. Go and have your smear!

I'm going on Thurs - wish they had an earlier app. The worry is horrible. I was silly not to go before but stupidly as I had just had a baby I just thought if there was something wrong id know about it because of all the tests, scans etc I had had over the 9 months.

I didn't miss a smear but I changed doctors and the results of my last one were missing. The nurse told me that it would take years for cells to become cancerous and not to worry about the missing test.

I'm sure you'll be fine but I can understand you're worried. Take care x

thank you Pink - I cant remember my last smear as i moved areas and doctors - I feel as though it was as late as 2009. roll on Thursday.

Ask about your mums history as well.
I have the cancer gene but rather than scare me it's given me cj trim over my life and an awareness of my body.
I think the pain and bloating is persistent not intermittent.
I know Thursday seems a long time but it won't make a difference in the grabs scheme of things so try not to worry.
Well done for acting promptly too.

Firstly, try not to worry, there are lots of things that can cause these symptoms, and in a woman your age it is far more likely than not to be something fairly benign.

You are doing the right thing going for a smear, but also make an oat with your gp to discuss your symptoms further. Smile

thanks everyone. Had a conversation with my mum last night - first real conversation about it. Apparently she had severe bloating and it was found to be a benign cyst in Ovary. Then while they were looking or something they found some cancer cells (i think this is what she meant) and they recommended she had a hysterectomy to be safe. She did, and was never able to have children after me - and she has always regretted it. Sounds awfully drastic and terrible - but maybe that's what it was like in 83? I feel so bad for her.

The pain and bloating happened last night again. Gone this morning - maybe it's an ulcer or a cyst....

nervous about Thurs - I thought after I had my baby I would never be shy/embarrassed about my body again. So silly.

How long does it take to get a result? I've just turned 25 and I am dreading having one, just for the wait after.

My mum has a tumour and it does not change in size it is pretty constant. There is no real feeling of bloatedness, only difficulty toileting, as its size pushes into her bowels. It takes her hours to pass motions, and with great pain.

I will keep my fingers crossed for you and wish you well tomorrow.

thanks everyone - you are all so kind. I have been! Already feel better. I can confirm that it didn't hurt one bit (it was more the thought of it that made me uncomfortable). The woman said the instrument they use has changed to a much more comfortable one. my last one was in 2009 - I missed the one in 2012 as I was pregnant. Apparently I should get the results in two weeks (can take a bit longer as it's a busy time apparently).
Apparently this doesn't test for Ovarian - so because of my mum's history I am going to the GP tomorrow to see if I can be tested for that.
I feel like a weight is already off my shoulders - the nurse was so lovely.

hi all - I got my results from my smear and they came back normal. I couldn't believe it - I was convinced there was going to be something wrong. I'm so relieved. Thanks for all your nice words x x x
