First period since I started taking the mini pill ( Cerazette ).

Gp put me on the mini pill ( after being refused several times in the past ) due to extreme ovulation pain, heavy and painful periods. She said that it should make my periods really light or stop them altogether, was also told it may take a few months to settle down.

I'm now on day 6 of my period with no sign of it stopping, it is lighter ( though still passing clots ) but still very painful. Is this pretty normal for the first month on them? Will next month be better?

Anyone else take them and seen huge improvement after a couple months?

Cerezette did improve my periods no end in terms of pain but I would be still asking for a referral to a gynae. It needs to be properly determined what the CAUSE of all this is rather than giving you pills (which is but a short term solution to what could have already been a long term problem).

Painful periods like you describe are not normal at all and the cause of that is often endometriosis (it can also cause heavy bleeding too and severe pains mid cycle). Its very common and very much under diagnosed (its usually only diagnosed through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy. Some GPs are not up to speed at all when it comes to such issues anyway).

Have been fighting for a gynae referral for years, I have had scans which showed small cysts but apparently this is nothing to worry about. I have seen 3 gps and tried various medication for the pain and heavy periods. Last month the ovulation pain was so bad I though it was my appendix about to burst.

Do you take mefenemic acid also. That really helped me.
I must say cerezette was great for my heavy painful periods. I haven't had a period in 2 years now.

I have had m-acid in the past but did not make much difference, also tried another one but can't remember what it was , will give the mini pill a few months and hope it settles down.

What grounds have they stated for refusing a referral to a gynae?. This is mad. You are being failed here currently.

Severe and ongoing pain mid cycle should always be investigated further to see whether endometriosis is the root cause.

If these people are unhelpful register with another GP practice and insist on being referred to a gynae. If not complain to the PCC that you are in.

Mini pill may not work out long term and it does not in any way address the root cause. I would urge you to seek proper answers now as to WHY is this happening because its all too easy to be fobbed off. I would put a crisp £5 note on it that endometriosis is the root cause.

It is so frustrating, have been to the gp so many times over the past few years, last year they sent me for a scan and said they would refer to gynae if it continues ( and depending on what scan showed ), have been back to gp 3 or 4 times since and they still won't refer, just keep offering me the coil or putting me on various Pills ( the normal contraceptive pill gave me head aches so was told I couldn't continue taking it ). I have to go back in 3 months when I have tried these out, hopefully then they will refer me ( though I don't hold out much hope ).

If endometriosis is present, scans will not detect it and I have had more internal ultrasounds than I care to mention!. Honestly some GPs are completely out of date when it comes to such issues.

Do not put up with this. If they are this unhelpful change GP practice now and keep banging on doors until you are properly listened to. Changing GP practice these days is far easier; its no point continuing to have a one way conversation with them.

Feeling very pissed off now, am on day 10 of period, woke up to heavy bleeding and very painful tummy . I know gp won't do anything until I have been on these pills for 3 months, not sure if I can put up with bleeding and pain for half the month ( looks like it's heading that way ).

I saw a nurse yesterday in order to go in the mini pill and she prescribed the same one as you OP. She has prescribed three mths but said if I have any strange symptoms to come back immediately and not to wait three mths. The main one she said was mood changes. You need to go back to your GP.

Thank you, I think I will go back, I'm still bleeding heavily and in a lot of pain, have been unable to do much for 2 days, I now think I may be anaemic due to bleeding for 11 days . Really wanted these pills to work, got excited when the gp said 'they might even stop your periods completely'.

Cerazette never made my periods lighter and I ended up bleeding for six weeks straight. For most women it will make it lighter or no periods at all but not for everyone.

I was switched to micronor and its much better. I still have periods but usually every five weeks and I take tranexamic acid which makes them a lot lighter and last between 5 and 7 days.

I've had mefanemic acid in the past but IMO tranexamic is better for me but everyone's different.

I'd try an see a different GP as that attitude is awful. Yes periods are natural but they shouldn't be as bad as you describe. You need something to treat it and tests to fine the cause. It could be that you're just unlucky and have heavy painful periods or there could be underlying endometriosis.

Well I'm still bleeding ( quite heavily ), I think I am now anaemic, feeling totally drained. Can't get to the gp until tomorrow, not sure if I should stop taking it or wait and see what gp says? I have had really bad head aches with it too and am in a fowl mood ( poor dh is getting the brunt of it ).
