Gallstone scan

WeeClype · 06/08/2014 11:16

Can someone tell me if I just move my top up for a scan to check for gallstones or do I change into a hospital gown?

How long should the scan take?

thanks

Urgh, I'm awake with what I think is gallstone pain. It seems to start in the evening, and I know I'll be woken up with the pain overnight.

Only have paracetamol in the house, which doesn't touch the pain. Feeling sore, a bit hot/cold but not been sick.

GP gave me Omeprazole 10 days ago; it's made no difference.

Am female, 42, fertile, overweight..... Aargh!

WeeClype · 16/08/2014 11:35

lotsofcheese go back to the gp, I wish I had dealt with my pain sooner, I always put it down as indigestion Sad

Thanks, weeclype. I phoned 111 this morning & they advised me to go to out-of-hours. Was seen by a Dr & given co-codamol for pain, which has helped. He seemed to think it was gallstone pain rather than reflux & advised me to go back to my own GP during the week.

He said that's it's unusual to have surgery for gallbladder disease; I can't keep having these episodes every week or so; I've got a 1-year old, a 5 year old & DP works away.

WeeClype · 16/08/2014 14:46

I'm the same im trying to deal with a 9 month old and a 2 year old and I don't know how much longer I can deal with the pain. Ive not had any food for 7 days now incase it triggers a attack Sad

I'm sipping water & eating dry cornflakes. They've stayed down so far.....

Feeling generally rubbish. At least I have a supply of co-codamol if it starts again. But that's not a long-term solution.

WeeClype · 16/08/2014 15:16

I'm on Lucozade and co-codamol Smile

I've managed today without painkillers as they left me weak and sleepy.

I think my main problem is now that I need to eat but I can't Sad

Lots of cheese you must go to your Gp that dr was talking rubbish, gallbladder surgery is one of the , of not the most common surgery.

lotsofcheese · 16/08/2014 21:39

That's interesting, Helensburgh. I was thinking that Dr's surely wouldn't leave you just on painkillers in the long term.

Was speaking to my mum earlier & she had gallbladder problems too in the past. I wonder I'd there's a family link or if it's just a coincidence??

I'm feeling much better after the co-codamol & spending most of the afternoon/evening sleeping.

helensburgh · 19/08/2014 17:02

Define family link.

Hope you ok

Thanks, I saw a different GP in the surgery yesterday & she was pretty sure it's gallstones. She did bloods & referred me for a scan. Depending on that, I'll be referred to the surgeons.

I had to take Monday off sick from work as I was up overnight with pain & had to take codeine about 5am. Was in no fit state to drive to work so had to cancel clinic of patients at short notice Hmm Felt really shitty, but no cover during holidays.

How's everyone else?

WeeClype · 19/08/2014 19:02

I've found out its not gallstones that I have its a load of sludge Sad , I'm now waiting on a app to have a camera down my throat to poke it away. If thats not successful then I'll get my gallbladder removed.

For my dinner I've had a slice of toast and some beans which I hope is ok but I'm running on empty so had to eat something. I'll take pain killers before bed just incase.

Clype: hope you kept the beans & toast down ok. I've eaten fairly normally today (apart from avoiding fat) & only needed Brufen for pain.

Do you mind me asking how long you had to wait for your scan? And how long to wait for the endoscopy? I wonder (judging by the user names!) if you, me & Helensburgh are all in Scotland? I'm in Edinburgh.

WeeClype · 19/08/2014 20:00

I 1st seen the GP on 16th July, he referred me for scan which I got 8th August. Ended up in a&e on the 12th August and that's where they told me I had a distended gallbladder and sludge.

I went back to the GP 2 days later as I was still in pain and she referred me to have the sludge poked away, hopefully that appointment will come in the post this week.

I'm in Stirling Smile

It'll be interesting to compare waiting times. My referral went off electronically, so I hope that speeds up the process. DP thinks he has private health insurance through work so we may use that if we need to. I couldn't face the thought of going on like this for months.

helensburgh · 19/08/2014 20:44

I am in s Outland but in Galloway, so Dumfries hospital.

About 6 weeks wait for a scan , go had results e next day and referred surgeon urgently , appt three weeks later, put on waiting list, per op 3 weeks after put on list, waiting op now!

I have been signed off sick as I also do a job seeing patients, but with a lot of travelling to clinics..

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 19/08/2014 20:51

When I went for my scan I was mid pain attack, could barely keep still on the table. The technician was hunting here and there asking me to breathe in and out, lift my arms, move my top out of the way a bit more - finally he said "have you still GOT your gall-bladder?!?" As he couldn't even find it!

Turns out that when you get the pain it's in spasm and contracts upwards disappearing off into an unexpected location! I had it removed 2 weeks later and had 15 chick-pea sized gall-stones. Wonder where they've got to actually...

WeeClype · 22/08/2014 17:39

Oh well thats been over a week now and still no appointment to attend the hospital to have my sludge removedSad

I'm feeling back to normal and don't need the pain killers now so at least thats something.

OP posts:
lotsofcheese · 22/08/2014 19:27

Well, I've got a date for my scan: 1st week in September, so 2 weeks waiting in total.

The bloods done on Monday came back very abnormal, so I've had them repeated again to make sure they're improving. My GP has referred me to the surgeons, still waiting on that, but it was only done on Wednesday.

Am feeling better too. A spa day tomorrow with my sister will help too Smile
