Metformim Madness!

I was prescribed Metformin (normal version, not slow release) by my doctor recently.

The background to this prescription?

My other half and I have been trying to conceive for about a year and a half to two years. During this process I ended up having various tests and scans done and it was decided that I may have very very mild PCOS in my right ovary - but still the doctor said I shouldnt be having too many problems conceiving.

My doctor also suggested that if I could lose some weight I could control any impending PCOS and suggested recently that I go on to 3 x metformin a day to help me lose weight and level everything back out.

I started the metformin 4 days ago and my word - I feel so so sick.

I'm pretty much constantly cramping in my stomach and have to run to the loo about 10 times a day for what can only be described as liquid movements - sorry for too much info - but it's got to be said.

I've also got zero appetite and I'm struggling to eat at all as the thought of food is making me feel naucious.

On the plus side (if there is one - feel like I'm living a health nightmare), I have lost over half a stone in about 3 days.

Is anyone else on Metformin that can share their story?

I need support in order to stay on this medication as every bone in my body is currently telling me to stop!

Tell me it will get better... please?! Sad

Hi blue - yes I have taken Metformin twice.
Once to conceive - due to PCOS - worked within 3 months. Metformin does supress your appetite and the upset stomach and cramps can be reduced by always taking it with food and cutting out fatty food from your diet. Over time these SEs do reduce though.
I'm taking it again now due to type 2 diabetes and this time have been on it about 8 months and have virtually no SEs any more.

Stick with it - it can work Smile

oh - and you are supposed to build the dose up - usually 2 pills/day to start with then increase after say 2 weeks!!!

OK - I really REALLY need everyone's help now.

I've felt so bad all day and just to ease my mind that it def was the metformin I just did a pregnancy test (Internet cheapy) and it instantly came up positive.

Is there any way this can be wrong? Can Metformin skew the pregnancy test results?

I'm panicking Shock

Erm, I think you're pregnant!

I took metformin to conceive (PCOS), and it worked. Sounds like you didn't need it!

I don't know what to do. I really wasn't expecting this. Don't get me wrong, we will be over the moon as we've been casually trying for nearly two years. But we're now getting married and I'd put it to the back of my mind until after the wedding

Ah, weddings can always wait. Or just do it anyway!

Yes, called him instantly. He's just trying to pack up and leave the office. He's ecstatic but doesn't want to get too excited as like me, he's concerned that somehow it's wrong.

My sister was prescribed metformin. When she went for a repeat prescription they made her do a pg test. It was positive. They warned her that it would be very early, but when she was scanned she found out she was 17 weeks gone and hadn't needed the stuff in the first place as she'd caught in the first days of taking it.

bluefreckles · 04/08/2014 14:03

We've done 5 tests now - all positive.

Had an appointment with the doctor this morning who assured me that metformin cannot give false positive pregnancy tests.

Now waiting for an appointment with the hospital for a dating scan
