Foot massager for arthritis?

My mum has severe arthritis and thinks a foot massager will help her (not a foot spa).
She's being currently sucked into buying all sorts via these crappy magazine adverts which are 'celebrity endorsed' and therefore must be true. (Not at all convenient that they are on the backs of magazines aimed at people her age group)

Anyway I want to buy her a decent one if thats what she wants. She's isn't a stupid woman but she's in pain and is at the stage where she just wants relief and will pay whoever and whatever to get
it. Any ideas?

What sort of arthritis does she have? I have rheumatoid and the thought of a foot massager anywhere near me poor feet would have been in tears!

No experience I'm afraid but can sympathise as my mum has arthritis in her hands and is very similar, she just wants something to make her more comfortable and will try anything

Would your mum consider going to a decent beauty therapist for a massage on her feet?

Even though they may only have full body massage on there price list most will massage just the area you want massaged and charge accordingly.

Manual massage is really good for arthritis as the therapist can tailor the pressure to your mums needs, my mum has arthritis in her hands and she finds massage a lot of help with it.

Thanks folks. Yeah it's rheumatoid. She's now convinced the pain in her feet is a cause of poor circulation and believes some foot massager she saw in a magazine is the answer. It's almost £200 though and will probs end up in the back of her wardrobe when it doesn't work. She's waiting on a knee op and her condition kid largely confined to her knees and elbows. It's bloody awful seeing her in so much pain. She's only 65:/

And sorry no- she wouldn't consider a beauty therapist. She is very self conscious and wouldn't even go to the hairdressers.

Would she go to a sports massage therapist? I found that helpful and it also gave me reassurance as (absolutely no offense to beauty therapists) but I wanted someone who had studied the mechanics of the body in a slightly more medical way.

I feel for your mum. I'm 26 and have had RA for 5 yrs. My feet are, by far, the worst affected - swollen, deformed and agonising. It's such a horrific condition and very misunderstood.

Would anyone mind taking a look at this device she wants and seeing if they think it would help her. I don't want to shell out if it's another crappy gadget that she's hoping in vain will help her.
