Reasons for hair falling out

My sister's hair is falling out (not literally) but when she brushes it or washes her hair. We're not talking the odd strand or 2 but quite a lot. I lost hair after having my kids but she hasn't had any kids recently.

She has had her thyroid checked and it is normal so it's not that. What could it be?

How recent is "recently"?
Mine has recently started falling out again. My DD is 14 months old and I'm still bfeeding.

Some years ago this happened to me and I lost about half my hair . I was advised to take a good multivitamin and minerals supplement, and within two weeks the hairloss started going back to a 'normal' amount of shedding. Also the hair began growing back and I had to get my long locks bobbed because there was so much short regrowth that it was unmanageable.

Because it had happened to me before, when I started losing hair 3m after having ds the GP said that it was not hormonal but dietary, and I should try the supplements again. And again, it worked. IIRC I needed to take the supplements for a few months before noticing any regrowth, and keep taking them for probably 6m+ for the shedding not to resume if I stopped taking the supplements. It also helped my nails to get stronger and longer.

Just got back from the hairdressers where someone else mentioned this problem and the hairdresser said that more hair falls out at this time of year. Could just be that - but would check with GP if it goes on much longer.

My hairdresser said that humans shed their hair natuarally at this time of year.

PrettyCandles - did you take a normal multivitamin and minerals supplement or one especially for hair and nails?

PrettyCandles · 14/09/2006 14:30

Sorry, I don't remember.

Probably both, sometimes getting a Solgar formulation at the healthfood shop, sometimes getting something off the shelf at Tesco.

Because I could see results within 2-4w, I could try different formulations until I found one that suited. Someimes differnt formulations can disagree with some people's digestion.

And BTW, it's true about seasonal shedding. I have always shed more hair in the autumn than at any other time, unless I've been pg or bf.

Thanks, PC. My mum has always tried to persuade me to take supplements but I have always resisted, saying I can get what I need from food (have shedded lots of hair since having dd though - over 2 years ago).

I thought so to. Guess it's not always the case.
