Hypothyroid- what to expect?

Hi all- I'm a newbie looking for some advice/experience really.

I've discovered a swelling on my thyroid, doc has ordered ultrasound and blood tests have been done. Waiting for results, but based on what he's said, plus my symptoms, plus family history, I'm expecting hypothyroidism.

I know I'm jumping the gun a bit- it's not confirmed yet- but I'd like to know what everyone's experiences have been after diagnosis, on starting meds etc.. Any advice or shared experience you can give is great.. Thank you Smile

I lost weight. Smile

Mine was diagnosed after I had DC.1. I never lost any baby weight and was so tired. Got referred by my GP to an endocrinologist who started me on thyroxine, lost weight pretty quickly. Think my hair is slightly thicker.

Thank you! I will definitely accept weight loss and thicker hair!

20lb weight loss in first three months on treatment, hair restored, finger nails thick and strong, psoriasis gone, joint and muscle pain gone.

After a year on treatment, basically all my symptoms have gone. However, the rider is that treatment needs to be optimal to achieve this.

Internet forums are full of people having a horrendous time, but remember, thyroxine is the standard treatment and works for something like 85% of patients.

Thanks RockinD I have noticed a fair few horror stories floating around! I'm trying to ignore them. Great to hear you've had such a positive experience
