I've had it a couple of times - infection for retained placenta. It is strong stuff and can make you feel terrible. Whatever you do, don't drink alcohol - it's one of the antibiotics where the warning is true.

On the plus side, it's strong and should kill off your infection so that you can get the tooth done.

I had it and it was dreadful. Felt very tired and as down almost as I'd ever felt as well as feeling sick most of the time I was on it. Helped by eating little and often and sucking ginger travel sweets from Holland And Barrett and using those travel band things (which may have just been psychological). So bad I've sworn I wouldn't use it again. You really do have my sympathies. Sad

Shock Ellie you have had the same symptoms as me. this is day four of taking it. i was so down earlier. which was unnerving as i suffer from depression anyway.

i would never have it again.

my gp prescribed me a different one today. so fingers crossed.

I've only had it intravenously and it affected my eyesight. The medical staff wouldn't believe me (it was because I was crying apparently) but I will never take it again.

I hope you are ok withe the new antibiotic.

Jjuice · 17/07/2014 21:35

Hope you are ok on new ones.

my dsis and I have both had for tooth abcess and have both been really bedridden ill from them. Although to befair the ttooth pain was worse.

I felt tired, ill and anxious. I also had a metal nasty taste in mouth for days.

piratecat · 17/07/2014 21:57

PinkSparklyElephant, that sounds bloody awful. I feel better this afternoon thankyou.

Jjuice, I have been to bed for naps as felt so rough, like you did. Quite alarming. I was lying there thinking well this is better than the pain, but i felt very anxious with it, which seemed to make the whole thing worse iyswim.
If anyone else goes searching on mn about, at least they will see that sometimes it can have these effects. oh, I am also really bloated!

I am allergic to penicillin so the met was an alternative.

I didn't have psychological effects, just felt awful. Nauseous - struggled to keep the meds down, terrible headaches. Much time spent in bed feeling sorry for myself.

A friend had it and ignored the alcohol rule and was really ill. TBH, friend was basically an alcoholic and probably shouldn't have been prescribed it.

One of my DC is allergic to penicillin and it is a real issue that the docs end up giving stronger than necessary anti-bs as most of the weaker ones are penicillin-related.

digerd · 18/07/2014 06:51

I felt sea sick when I took it and lost half a stone in weight in 10 days - despite the course being for only 5 days.
Never taking that again.

piratecat · 18/07/2014 10:37

blimey, you lost alot of weight.

I am on Erythomicin now, hope it works.

bookcave, it is tricky to be allergic. hope your son is well.
