My DH has been in hospital for a week with severe pain in his torso/back. They finally diagnosed bi-lateral blood clots and fluid in his lungs today following a CT scan. The likely cause is major surgery (a colectomy) 3.5 weeks ago. I think it took so long to diagnose because he didn't have any other symptoms of PE - he wasn't breathless, no cough or spitting up blood, and his HR and oxygen sat levels were normal. He was also considered low risk for PE - mobile really soon after surgery, young, not overweight etc.

I am in shock at the diagnosis but relieved they have found a cause of his pain - he has been on high doses of morphine with no explanation for the worsening pain. They have started him on warfarin and another blood thinning agent.

To complicate things, I am 34 weeks pregnant with our 3rd child. We were hoping for no complications following surgery so that he'd be relatively okay by the time baby comes. Has anyone been through similar experience or any medical people able to tell me what to expect in terms of recovery time? I'm sure we'll find out more from the doctors tomorrow but am just impatient for any info!

My dad had 5 PEs a few years ago, secondary to a massive DVT. He was only in hospital for a couple of days once started on clexane, but it was a lot of faffing about with daily visits to the warfarin clinic till his INR was in the right range, when it went to weekly.
