dd has chicken pox - what can I expect her to be like?

Galaxy, both my DSs (aged four and two) had it recently and they both had one day and night when they were pretty grouchy, but after that they were not too bad at all.

DS2 was initially very resistant to calamine lotion but I eventually managed to persuade him to put some on himself. Try putting a couple of tablespoonfuls of bicarbonate of soda in her bathwater - that soothes itching too. If she is over three, you can use Eurax instead of calamine lotion - bit less messy.

oh galaxy you poor thing - hope you don't have to head north again...can you attend by phone conference or anything?

my neice has just had it. she was a bit whiny and grumpy for a couple of days with the cough etc but cheered up pretty quickly and coped fine with the spots. I think a few treats helped no end!!

hope it works out ok on both sides (work and pox) - sending hugs and thinking of you

My dd (22 months) got it last friday. She was at her mosy uncomfortable on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Feeling down in herself and itchy. She knew something was wrong. We had the night from hell Saturday night, she couldnt sleep due to being uncomfortable. Today (tuesday) she seems a lot better and seems to have scabbed over almost overnight. We've bathed her twice a day in water & bicarb, put calamine aqueous cream on her about 3 times a day. and kept her cool and only wearing sotton PJ's for the whole week. I've been giving her Calpol and Anti Histamines (as directed) The worst area has been her nappy area, that has driven her mad at times. Blisters everywhere, poor girl!! Hope this helps

Both DSs had it in the last week or so. Ds1 had one day of being really off-colour, slept a lot, then 4 days later came out in hundreds of huge hideous blisters. He was absolutely covered, poor little chap. Ds2 has only got 3 spots but has had terrible cold symptoms for nearly a week.
The usual calpol and calamine have helped them both loads, but have heard of people using anaesthetic gel on the very worse spots to stop the itching. Haven't tried it myself though as haven't got any gel.
And yes, tell work to take a running jump if you possibly can, although having had days off with little poorly people lately I know that's easier said than done. I'm sure they think I'm lying about my kids' illnesses so I can stay at home and eat chocolate all day.

If she is still in the blister stage there is a homapathic remedy called Rux tox 30 and in cuts down the amount of days of the blisters.Medised is good to for the itching it also help them to get to sleep at night.They also do a calamine lotion which is oily and is easier to apply I keep mine in the fridge too.DD came down with it yesterday too.

Galaxy, I found a couple of warm baths a day with bicarb of soda in really helped dd's spots. And I put Sudocrem on the ones on her bum - just so they had a barrier (and let her got nappy free as much as possible). Hope your dd feeling a bit better now.

MC has just come down with Chicken Pox. We're in Morocco and they don't seem to have heard of calamine lotion. Am using sudocrem on the spots for now... is that ok?

Rochine, would second the vote for baths with bicarbonate of soda. My 5 month DD has just had it and the baths really soothed her. Best of luck!

Can you get any anti-histamine suitable for your child's age, Rochine? That said, neither of my kids didn't seem at all bothered when they had CP (age 3 months and 2y+2 months). I had antihistamine syrup... but didn't need it.

Got antihistamine syrup too grumpyzebra but she won't take it without a fight... hardly seems worth it! Luckily the Calamine arrived this morning because last night poor thing couldn't sleep with all the itching... but she is on good form today.

Dd came out in the blisters/spots last Weds monring and she seems to be over the worst. Gave her calpol and tried the rux tox but she hated the crytals on her tongue so we had to try piriton syrup. As far as the itching goes it's been at a real mimimum - I'm not sure at what point it worst for them, but we've put aloe vera gel on her after her bicarb baths and it seems to have worked miracles (touch wood). The only itching she's had have been on her scalp and hairline (where the gel couldn't reach). Hope this is of help.

Question: Does anyone know if stiffness of joints is common with chickenpox? For the last 2/3 days dd seems to have had trouble standing up from when she's been sitting or crouching. It looks just like we do when our legs are stiff. She doesn't seem in pain, though. Any ideas?
