Hayfever or a cold?

Hello folks. Does anyone know the difference between hayfever and a cold? I don't normally have allergies but I understand that at the moment the pollen count is unusually high, so it might be that. I have stuffy, runny sneezy nose, a bit of sinus pressure, headache, mild ear ache. Only the mildest of an irritated throat and I'm exhausted. I took a hayfever tablet today - the headache cleared momentarily but I didn't really notice an improvement aside from that. I've now taken a cold medicine and am a little less busy in the nose area. I rarely get sick but this isn't a cold as I know it - I don't have any real throat or chest stuff going on. I'm wondering which medicine to stick with!

Delicate disgusting question - what colour is your snot?! Green suggests a cold, colourless suggests allergy (hay fever).

I have hayseed and a virus at the moment!

The virus, which I know is going around locally to me, is a sort of cold, but high in your nose, sinus etc but not a full on streaming cold. I had a slight temperature for two days, felt very achey and slept a lot. Heavy eyes etc.

I appear to have zapped it with white wine at a party last night, though. Maybe try that? Wink

Hayfever, not hayseed!

I've experienced the exact same thing as you and have the exact same question! My guess is that it is both - being run down made me susceptible to the hayfever?

Sounds like a cold to me.

I have that sinussey virus just now.

Thanks all! I ended up becoming ill with D&V, and to answer a previous question... it was at that time green. I am now recovered from the D&V but have returned to just sneezing, coughing, etc. and the unmentionable is now white - so I think like fivescups I've had both. Darn it. Am off to the chemist today for hayfever tablets!

Glad I found this thread. I'm on my 3rd bad cold in 3 months. Very snotty (yellow/green mostly). I'm BFing 3mo DD2 so put it down to low immunity, plus I think DDs and I have been passing the bugs back and forth between us.

Wondered if it was hayfever, but as I understand it most people either get early spring (tree pollen) or late spring/summer (grass pollen) and not usually both. But that may well be nonsense.

Another theory is rhinitis, which apparently is common in pregnancy (so possibly also when BFing?)

But at least I haven't got D&V as well - glad you've recovered from that at least R2D2
