I had a cystogram today and I have reflux. Going to see the consultant next week, just wondered if anyone has any experience

wow. is that good news? in the sense of not having a knackered kidney?

MrsFio · 06/09/2006 20:42

glad you know what it is, sorry I dont have a clue

MrsFio · 06/09/2006 20:43

didnt fairydusts dh have kidney colic, is that the same thing? (both sound infantile)

CountessDracula · 06/09/2006 21:25

No the kidney is still knackered it will never be better. But they can operate to stop the reflux to stop the recurrent infections I think

will you need lanza... something or other drugs to quell it? I know loads of people (well 3 or 4) who takes these for reflux. There is something called Barrets (sp) syndrome which is to do with it.....

CountessDracula · 06/09/2006 21:33

thanks cece but it is kidney reflux, totally different!

yy that is it

the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder should have a valve thingy to stop the urine getting back up, mine is faulty one one kidney and have had repeated kidney (but not bladder) infections ie no probs with cystitis type symptoms

CountessDracula · 06/09/2006 21:57

If it's the same thing they do for reflux in babies then it's a small routine op that removes blockage/widens the uretha to stop the reflux.

amiami · 07/09/2006 12:30

Hi. I had repeated kidney infections on one side for years. Only discovered I had reflux when I was admitted during pregnancy with severe kidney pain - think it was actually causing my kidney to swell. They have just decided to keep an eye on it but it seems to have improved since I cut down on alcohol and drink lots of cranberry juice to ward off infections. I think they first consider long term low dose antibiotics as treatment. Hope the consultant gives you all the info you need.

CountessDracula · 07/09/2006 14:25

thanks amiami
I am on cranberry juice (yes it does seem to be working!) and cefalexin for 3+ months, low dose. I have been much better so maybe I can avoid surgery too
Thanks x
