Fibroadenonma

Hiya
I've just got back from the GP who has said that the lump in my breast is a fibroadenoma. I am going to be given an appointment within two weeks to get it checked out properly, but he said that because it felt quite large (maybe 4cm across) it might have to be taken out.
Has anyone had an experience of this?
Obviously, I am hugely relieved it is not more serious, but worried about surgery and losing part of my breast. I currently have one child and we are hoping to have another soon (ish) - could it affect my ability to bf?
If anyone could advise or point me in the right direction for info I'd be grateful. Thanks.

I had one of these around 10 years ago. It was probably around the size of a marble. I had biopsy done which confirmed that it was benign but was also advised to have it removed - mainly because it was a little uncomfortable if I lay on my front or had any pressure on it. Anyway, surgery very straightforward -incision made along edge of areola and I now have the faintest of scars but you would never notice it really. Re breastfeeding, I have gone on to bf three babies. Please don't worry - and if yiu have any other questions just ask!

Glad to hear all was ok with you.
I think mine is more like golf ball than marble size- hence my fear about impact if it is taken out. It feels like maybe 1/5 the size of my breast . Bit scary really.

Just bumping in case anyone else can help?

I've got a few of these, but have left them alone. Has the doctor described it as a size of a golf ball or is what you think it is? I ask, as I thought one of mine was that sort of size but at the breast clinic they said it was the size of a broad bean.

Hi Pollywallywinkles - the GP didn't say how big it was, but it feels pretty big to me! Interesting what you say about difference in size. I guess it is hard to say without a proper scan. Thanks for your reply, I'm glad you are not too troubled by yours

I had one of these and still do! Not big enough to take out and not painful. Had 2 weeks of hell waiting for tests and results though.
No point anyone telling you not to worry, of course of there's a lump there what else are you going to do!?
GPs are generally good at detecting the "non sinister" (awful phrase) lumps and bumps so generally they wouldn't say it was ok unless they were sure it was, if that makes sense.

On a terrible side note, I tormented DH for those 2 weeks telling him I was going to get new boobs if I did indeed have cancer. It was a silver lining of a very fucking grey cloud and I oddly and unjustifiably miss those new boobs I never got. Not diminishing the pain of those who go through it at all, of course.
My very black sense of humour sometimes is ridiculous.

Dontlaugh my comments to OP about 'not worrying' were in response to her concerns about surgery. I was simply trying to reassure her that having a lump removed in my case was not too invasive and had no impact on me being able to breastfeed. Of course jt is natural to worry but a GP is unlikely to actually say something is harmless unless they are fairly certain.

I've had 2 removed around 25 years ago. My understanding is that the recommendation now is to leave them aalone unless they're uncomfortable. the biggest one i had removed was the size of a walnut but flatter so nor really uncomfortable. Surgery was absolutely fine and I've since breastfed 2 babies.

After having those 2 removed I've since had a lot more. I just seem to be very prone to them. But unlike what many doctors have said, they've significantly reduced in size or completely disappeared during pregnancy and breastfeeding, so maybe it would be worth waiting until after you've had your baby, if it's not bothering you too much...

Oh peacypops that wasn't aimed at you at all! I'm so sorry. I heard that phrase so much during my own triple assessment I just projected onto this post, many apologies, I didn't even see those words in your post.

Of course you are correct, the surgery is a piece of cake.
