Wrenched my hip/back while coughing - in pain - advice please!

In a lot of pain - hard to sit on chair to type this. Wrenched/pulled something in my right hip/lower back three days ago. It hurt, but not terribly - was just uncomfortable for a couple of days.

Last night I was coughing again and I really did something: was in agony.

Got myself into a lying position, but couldn't move at all til Dh came in to help me. Took nurofen with codeine but didn't feel any relief. I did sleep and a few hours later in the night was able to turn over by myself.

This am better, could get up and hobble round, but have wrenched it again today helping one of the dds with something.

I don't know how to describe what sort of pain/injury it is: is it muscular or have I done something to my back? Is it worth going to the doctor?

Should I stay still or keep moving? Any other pain relief advice? Still really hurts every time I cough.

Sorry for long post. Am standing up now, sitting hurts.

Sounds like a back problem yes to GP, if you are in spasm which sounds likely diazepam will help. Also stronger codeine with paracetamol and a stronger NSAID like naproxen ( with a stomach protector).

Heat can be wonderfully soothing so get a hot water bottle on it now! On the Back Pain thread we have a mantra 'rest, potter, rest'. So no bending, lifting or rushing around. Learn to delegate and write lists for others to help. Children can soon learn to be more independent even if they are young. These things can take a while to resolve so be patient and don't push yourself.

Hope that helps and you can see your GP very soon. If in agony do call Out of Hours. Good luck and feel free to join us on the Back thread.Smile

Ps Do Not Sit Down!!! Try lying fairly flat with a pillow or two under your knees, it takes the pressure of your lower back. I hate to tell you this but my original injury happened when I had whooping chough Sad. Try to support the area as much a a you can if still coughing.

Thanks Matilda - I read some of the back thread and just felt dreadful for all of you that suffer long term with this. I'm thinking - hoping - this is just temporary!

I feel like I can't just give DH everything to do. You're right about children though - mine could be more independent, I just need to encourage them.

I'll see if the doctor will prescribe stronger pain relief.

Thanks for your advice
