Dd's had a cough, been off her food and generally unwell for nearly 3 weeks now. I took her to the GP repeatedly who said it was exacerbated asthma. Today I was so worried as she wasn't getting any better I took her to A&E and they did an x-ray, SATS, etc. and diagnosed her as having mycoplasma pneumonia. She's got antibiotics, steroids and lots of inhalers to take.

Anybody know what we should expect in the next week or so?

hi - followed your link! Goodness, not having it easy are you?

mycoplasma pneumonia is a pneumonia caused by a bacterial infection as oppose to a viral one as far as I know. DS was in hospital back in march with it (he was so little they wanted him in for obs). The antibiotics are to clear up the infection, the steroids will help ease the swelling and open up her airways so she should feel better soon(as will the inhalers). It's really just a very bad chest infection so she'll feel unwell for quite a while and may have a cough for some weeks yet. If she doesn't start to improve in the next few days or gets worse though go back to A&E for reassessment.

Hope this helps IF, better week ahead hopefully!

IF - just coincidence that both our LO's have had the same thing! Hope she's feeling better soon - any improvement today?

I haven't seen a major change in her cough yet, lc. Today and yesterday she's been really uncharacteristically maniacal, I'm wondering if all those steroid tablets have a bizarre effect on them? She's normally quite a sedate child (for a 4-year-old) but she's been bouncing off the walls, can't focus her on anything at all.

Bumping this for you as I've never come accross those sort of side effects from steroids, maybe someone else has? Only thing I can thin of is that maybe there's some additives in them?

I don't think the steroids had anything to do with it, my brother (a nurse) told me that when a child is v. low oxygen in the blood they go a bit manic. Today she's looking much better and is very very calm and quiet and exhausted which is, I think, a better sign as it probably means she's not surging with adrenaline as she tries to breathe. So hopefully turned a corner.
