Ciproflaxacin - side effects?

I have had a bladder infection since the weekend and on Monday my GP prescribed Trimethropin but after taking it my symptoms worsened considerably. i got a really bad headache which didnt respond to any painkillers, I am aching all over, have had chills and night sweats. I felt so bad that I went back to Dr this morning. She thinks the symptoms are a sign that the infection might have travelled up to my kidneys and she has changed the antibiotic to Ciproflaxacin. I have read the leaflet and the side effects sound scary. I googled and found loads of reviews from people saying they have experienced lasting side effects from taking the drug - nerve damage, tendonitis, weakness. I am really worried about taking it. Just wondered if anyone had experience of taking it? Obviously I need to deal with this infection but don't feel like I want to take Ciprofloxacin. Should I call my GP and ask for an alternative?

How did you get on with ciprofloxacin? I'm in the same boat x

@Magic1231, did you get side effects with Ciproflixacin?

WilsonMilson · 05/12/2021 14:09

I wouldn’t wish Cipro on my worst enemy, and I would only ever have it again in the event of life threatening illness.

Like you was prescribed for UTI back in 2012. Ended up with Achilles tendonitis and was on crutches for weeks, crepitus in loads of joints, awful insomnia and racing thoughts. Took months to feel normal again. And that was after stopped it within 48 hours due to side effects.

Equally I know some people are fine with it.

There’s a lot of info and groups online about people who’ve been ‘floxxed’.

I know this is an old post, but I do have a question for you. Did you get headaches when on ciprofloxacin? I'm currently on them and have bad headaches...mm

WilsonMilson · 04/02/2022 14:22

@Beezkneezhoney sorry just saw your post. I had headaches, tight band round head feeling, racing thoughts and felt like I was losing my mind. Then came the joint pains and tendonitis. I would never have Cipro again unless I was at death’s door. I recovered after a couple of months, but I’ve heard of people who’ve been permanently damaged. Awful antibiotic.

Wilsonmilson.. did it takes months for the headaches to go away ? I've also had this constant nausea, did you ever experience that?

WilsonMilson · 10/02/2022 14:18

For me it was a couple of months, but I didn’t complete the course because of the side effects. I imagine it would be worse if you took them for longer. It will pass but it can take a long time to get back to normal. There’s lots of info online - don’t get too freaked out by it as they are worst case scenario people. Most others just get better and don’t post about it online.

I didn’t get nausea with it, funnily enough I have nausea at the moment as I’m dealing with some gastric issues and h pylori and it’s awful, but not with Cipro. Although I’ve heard of it in others.

This too shall pass, you will be well again it might just take some time. Make sure your doctor knows you can’t be prescribed Fluoroquinolones in the future.
