How to check strings on coil

Hi,

I had the iud fitted yesterday and the nurse showed me the strings and that I have to check monthly. She said the strings would be sticking out my cervix.
So today I thought I would gave a feel so I could see what they felt like. But I can't find them. I've poked my fingers in as far as they will go and can't feel anything other than folds of skin etc. I can't even reach my cervix.

Am I doing it right? Could it be the strings have tucked themselves in one of the folds or something? Also am I meant to be able to reach my cervix?

How am I going to check it's still in place if I can't feel anything?

Thanks

I find that if I stand in a squat position then I can reach far enough to feel the strings with the tips of my fingers (they feel jaggy). Well I used to be able to feel them until they disappeared up through my cervix!

My progesterone coil was fitted last June under GA, despite me going into hospital to have it fitted I was never advised to check the strings and neither did I have the sense too.....ooooopppsss!

I just thought it will be ok for 5 years unless it starts picking up radio frequencies.

Urghhhhh

I've tried squatting, laying down and also one leg on the edge of the bath and I still can't feel much. All I can feel is folds of spongy skin. I've looked online and they said your cervix feels like tip if your nose but I can't feel that either. I can feel nubby bits but it doesn't feel like the shape of my cervix. I expected it to be smooth with my cervix at the top and easily identifiable with strings poking out.

Maybe I have an acordian shaped vagina!

I have never checked my strings.

when I couldnt find my strings and the nurse couldnt find them either I had to go for several scans and an x-ray to locate the coil. I was also advised to use other contraception until they worked out whether the coil was still where it was supposed to be.

(They can become embedded in the lining of the womb and can also migrate through the womb lining and end up in places they shouldnt be which is why they advise you to check for the strings)

Luckily they found my coil but I am not looking forward to getting it removed if the strings are not easily accessible

Iv had mine for 18 months and have never felt the strings! At my one and only check up, at a month, the GP couldn't find them either, she was almost up to her elbows inside me Shock
She said my cervix tilted backwards and not to worry about it. Iv not tried since. Out of interest, does anyone have an annual check up for the mirena? Cos I've had nothing Hmm

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/05/2014 23:38

I had my Mirena replaced this morning, I could always feel the strings on the old one and was told to check it at least monthly. Never had an annual checkup but was told to get it checked if I ever had any worries.

This morning I was told not to rely on the new one for contraception for a month and to have a checkup with the GP first to make sure it was still correctly positioned.

Give it a few days. Your cervix changes throughout the month so you may find it's easier to check at certain times the month
I have a retroverted uterus (or something) and some times I can't feel them, mine also get tucked around my cervix
