Fixed braces and teeth brushing

DS1 having his train tracks fitted tomorrow.

Those of you whose DS and DD have them do they really take a toothbrush to school with them for after lunch?

Erm..... No?! I had train tracks for many many years and I never took a toothbrush to school with me.. occasionally I'd stick a pen between the wire to get food out.. maybe a flosser would be more useful, but tbh, I wouldn't worry about it! Just a good scrub when they get home!!

Thanks Beany! That's what he told me his friends do (or rather don't!).

I guess we'll see what the Orthodentist says as well.

When my ds had his braces fitted abt 15 months ago he used 2 have a tooth brush in his locker @ school & he did use it but I think the novelty wore off since he went frm yr9 to yr 10.

DS1 has just had his taken off after 2 years. The routine was clean teeth and use TeePee brushes (and Waterpik, jet blast water thing) in the morning and evening. Plus an extra brush when getting in from school. The Orthodontist recommended 4 times a day but he wouldn't have brushed his teeth at school.

He did have a little make up mirror in his rucksack to begin with to check for stuck food.

My DS has fixed top ones, DD has removable.

I bought a baby brush each + they have a sonic battery brush each,
Little brushes (smallest ones)
A water-jet

DD uses a foaming denture cleaner on hers before she stores them.

DS can barely remember to take his carcass to school, I would not trust him to brush there.

Deffo no stretchy chewy stuff and all fruit chopped up! My DS had his taken off last month, it only took a year and he has to wear retainers just at night now. His teeth are gorgeous!!! And they were like a bombed street before.

He was v disciplined with his oral hygiene though. I recommend mouthwash as well- after brushing. The orth told us that would help.

Might be a bit sore so some painkillers and also buy some of the wax in case it rubs. Promise they soon get used to it though.

How are the retainers going Mighty? DS1 is on night 4 of 'for the rest of your life'. He isn't enjoying them too much.

Not bothered him at all. Full time for first six weeks now just nights. Will have a review next year. They won't provide replacements but if they think it will help I will be more than happy to pay the £150 or so if he needs one (age 15 so face shape still changing).

That's good then. DS1 says they are making him drool and can't wait to get them out in the morning. Just nights though- forever.

We had the droopy thing with the removable braces he wore for a bit, has just been wearing retainers at night since beginning of year so having fixed will be a bit strange again I'm sure. DH has just gone to pick him up from school to take him- I'm a nervous wreck around dentists so better he does it!!

Sparkling he's at home, mouth a little sore but has now managed some Hula Hoops!!!

Just got him some of the little Tepe brushes to use so all good.

He's back for checkup and tightening early July then gets a bottom one fixed too in early August.

I actually think they look quite trendy in a weird way!!!

He says he doesn't want colour- although I don't she offered it today anyway- he said maybe when he gets the bottom one.

He cleaning is v important. As well as a mouthwash like Fluoriguard. The fluoride is the charmer. Otherwise you get this odd demineralisation around the brackets which is almost impossible to rectify

Thanks for that Mrsmorton - he normally uses Listerine but maybe the Floriguard is a good idea!

If he uses a tepe brush, he will become very adept at discretely cleaning amongst the brackets after eating. The plaqu sticks around the brackets and makes the white/brown marks.

His teet will look gorgeous once he's done Grin

My son has the beginning of a dodgy tache- not quite ready to shave yet but not far off :)

When I was growing up- braces were the work of a devil. Now they seem to be cool!!

Just glad we were NHS funded- otherwise it would have been 2k plus.
