It will be fine - you get to eat ice lollies and people fuss over you and the best thing is you never get tonsilitis again. Hospitals are great at involving parents.

Auntymandy · 28/08/2006 06:37

just remember that an hour is longer in hospital than at home, so you will feel everyone elses child were in and out of thatre and yours has been in for ever....not true!!!!

Choco · 28/08/2006 07:10

the most i'm worried about is the pain that he'll suffer afterwards!!!

They are really good and keep them topped up with pain relief if needed.
He will be fine. bouncing about again in no time!

I was worried SICK when DD had a hernia op a couple of months ago, but it went really smoothly and the staff were fantastic.

Good luck

crazydazy · 28/08/2006 17:06

DS had his tonsils out when he was 2. He was a little poorly after but thats just to be expected because of his age and the fact that he just didn't understand what was happening to him.

How old is your little one?

Choco · 28/08/2006 17:11

he's 6 1/2, crazydazy, how long was his recovery?

Well he was quite poorly for a few days after, very clingy crying and saying his throat hurt etc but on saying that I think he recovered a lot quicker than I did and I had mine out aged 9. I think thats why I felt for him because I knew it was unpleasant for him.

Not even sure why they took them out, they were big (as are DD's) but he has never had tonsillitis. They seemed to think it would improve his hearing and speech which I didn't think made any difference. I was quite angry they put him through it when imo it didn't really work. He didn't even have a follow up afterwards.

Choco · 29/08/2006 15:50

i'm sorry to hear that after what he went throught but didn't make a difference. that's what i'm afraid of too..putting him thr. it but won't make a difference afterall. i've heard that you can still get tonsilitis even when you have no tonsils! (sounds ironic, eh?) but i guess it's bc there's a slight chance that they'll grow back.

Well I had mine out at 9 and have never had it since but they just say the bugs just go straight to the tummy as the tonsils are there to catch germs supposedly.

Choco · 29/08/2006 16:46

crazydazy, what was youre reason for taking your tonsils out? recurrent tonsilitis too? then in your case did bugs go dirctly to your tummy instead? did you get sick alot after taking your tonsils out?

Choco - Please try not to worry too much (easier said than done) My ds2 had his out age 4 and I can't believe the immediate change in him - he changed from constantly having tummy aches, high temperatures, constantly run down and very sore throats to a happy, healthy boy (he is now 15). I completely agree with Auntymandy though - it really seems an eternity whilst they are in theatre - expect a long wait and have a little pressie to give him when he comes round. All the very best.

crazydazy · 30/08/2006 21:10

They took mine out because I kept choking on my food all the time as my tonsils were very large, I did get tonsillitis occasionally but not very much. No I wouldn't say I got more tummy bugs after and DS hasn't either, he's 4 now and had only 1 bug since he had his tonsils out.

crazydazy · 30/08/2006 21:10

Hope everything went okay choco, just realised that he would have had the op by now.

Choco · 01/09/2006 07:43

thank you everybody!! the op went well and my son's already eating normal meals (cold meals of course)!!! he's doing very good, and has been very brave ! and my only hope now is that no more tonsilitis from now on!!!!!
