broken big toe - cast required

I know, depends on break etc but asking anyway on the off chance someone has experience!

Broke my big toe on friday, will need to go to fracture clinic on either tuesday or Wednesday to have it looked at by a specialist. The dr who treated me wasn't sure if would need a cast or not and as I have a 4month old baby was reluctant to do so, which is why I need to attend fracture clinic (normally would be on monday but because of bank holiday it won't be until Tues or wed).

For obvious reasons i'm desperate to avoid a cast,my husband works and cast = crutches =major problem! I saw my xray and to me at least it looks like the break is right along the knuckle and the dr commented it was a 'belter' of a break.

I was sent home with crutches and told to use them as much as possible (easier said than done). When I can't use them I'm hobbling walking on the side of my foot keeping as much of the weight to the back of the foot as I can. Does anyone know if this sounds like the type of injury that could avoid a cast?

I broke my little toe before, it got reset under the influence of gas and air and taped to the next toe. The problem with a big toe is it is used for balance more and takes more weight, will be hard to keep weight off it. Good luck x
