Awful pain in my leg.

I haven't injured it. I've felt the pain before, on and off at night, maybe over a few months. About 3 weeks ago, I had it really badly overnight and it kept me awake for the whole night. Haven't felt it since, but it came back about an hour ago and is agonising.

Lower left leg, lower calf. A sort of pulsating pain. Very, very painful.

I'm not overweight or unfit. Not a smoker. Not pregnant.

Any ideas what might help relieve it? Paracetomol/ ibuprofen aren't having any effect. I'm dreading the night as have a long journey tomorrow and need to sleep!

Is it swollen at all? Red? Hot? Do you run?

Not swollen or hot. Yes, I run - very moderately, 3 miles twice or three times a week.

Unlikely to be a stress fracture then...but having had one your description made me think of it. It was night pain and what I can only describe as bone pain. Coming in rapid waves, oscillating would have been my description.

It's unusual so perhaps worth calling whatever the latest out of hours number is? DVT needs excluding I would have thought

I think it's Achilles tendonitis.

DH is a doctor but out at the moment, so he can rule out DVT when he's back. He thought it was just a one off muscle strain before. This sounds really melodramatic but the pain is worse than most of my labour with DS2!
