Allergy to Sulphur based drugs

Hi

My 7 year old son has just been diagnosed as being allergic to sulphur based medication. I had never heard of this before and was shocked to learn that it can be fatal especially if a sulphur based drug is given to a sufferer in its injection form or orally continuously.

Does anyone have any info on this or know of anyone who suffers from this? Any useful tips on how to deal with it?

Thanks

Hi there are you talking about Stevens johnson syndrome, triggered by sulphonamides?
If so, one of my sons is affected and i can tell you a bit (DON'T look it up on the internet unless you like being scared witless!) but don't want to rabbit on endlessly if its not the same and won't help... let me know!

Hi Glad you're back! YOu didn't say wht happened with your son but with mine he was given sulphsalzine to help with his inflamed gut and he then developed weird blisters everywher including on the soles of his feet/hands and seemed unwell within a few hours of having it. As I have another chronically sick child I am very vigilant about medication etc so rang his consultant immediately and my son was given mega dose of emergency steroids which solved the problem . Now we are just very careful. Another friends son was hospitalised as they didn't realise what was going on until their son's symptoms were quite severe but he's also fine now though still a bit light sensitive.
If you are very concerned about the degree of the reaction your son presented with you could get him a medicaelrt bracelt ( they come with coloured velcro straps now, my middle son has a one which he's v proud of!)
hope to hear from you!

Tufty,

My son developed blisters and a rash out in Kenya after having an sulphur based anti malaria medicine. However, there has been a revision on his diagnosis in the UK. The doctors think that he actually had a viral infection called something rosea which results in the blisters which appeared in a certain pattern and had what they referred to as a mother patch (one big one that started it all).In my sons case, the mother patch appeared BEFORE he had the medication hence the differing diagnosis. They cannot confirm though that it was not a reaction to sulphur unless he has another dose and reacts in the same way.

The medicine alert bracelet sounds great coz I know we will not always be around and would be useful if he is at school etc.

Thanks Tufty
