Head Lice in the Holidays

Hi, Have just discovered that my 2 dd's have headlice. During the Summer Holidays?? I was expecting this to happen once my daughter was at school but not during the holidays. Pharmasist gave me Malathion liquid, which has to be left on for 12 hours. Does anyone know if this works? My dd is due to start school on Friday and I hope to have rid of them before then.

Not tried that one, and believe me we have tried tons over the years
Anyway we have used Hedrin lotion recently and so far have remained nit free. Drives me mad when we return to school and become reinfested.

My DS hade headlice 2 wks ago and I used prioderm liquid which contains Malathion. It worked but it has a really strong smell.

Don't bother with the incecticide liquids, most of them don't work and you have to nit comb them anyway.

Do the following and you dd can start school and is no risk of passing them one.

Get a nit comb and a big bottle of cheap conditioner. Was her hair, leave it wet and put on loads of conditioner. In sections comb it with the nit comb, you will get the live lice out. As long as the hair is wet the lice stay still. Do this every 2-3 days. New lice will harch, but they don't leave the head untill they are full grown, at around 12 days old. As you comb you will see the lice getting smaller and smaller. After about 2 weeks your dd will be clear.

Keep doing the wet combing until she is clear of live lice. You can remove the emply egg shells for conspetic reasons if you like, just slide them off the hair shaf while the hair is wet with your nails. unhatched eggs are brown, harched ones are pearly white.

Harching lice fart their way out of the eggsac!

You will get good at this, it will happen lots

Thanks, we had lice in the house once before and I cant remember what treatment we used. I think it was a wash in wash out one. I always wash my dd's hair with conditioner too so I was surprised she got them. So, if I wash the stuff out her hair tomorrow and then condition comb it should it be clear? Thanks, am practicly a nit virgin!!!

Thanks, hopefully she will be free and clear by the time she goes to school on Friday. I will continue with the combing for the next week or so though. Thanks again.

The farting thing is totaly true

some female lice get cemented to your scalp as they lay their eggs as well. And to think we moans about child birth!

Blandmum · 21/08/2006 21:02

and yes you have to comb every 2-3 days do you 'catch' the lice as they hatch. Keep going until you don't get any more....usualy 2 weeks unles your dd gets re-infested.

You should do the rest of the family as well in case she has passed them on .

Honestly, as long as you have given her head a good going over the first time any tiny lice are too small to leave her head and get passed on. All you have to do it keep up the routine untill you stop finding any live lice. My dd has now had them 4 times and I can bore for Britain on the life cycle of the head louse!

A good session will take about 30 minutes, so plink her in front of a video and bribe her with some chocolate buttons! Do her head in sections, wipe the comb after each 'pass' through the hair.
