First period after baby

My dd is five months and I've just got my first period back. It's incredibly heavy, I'm having to change a thick pad every hour in the day and standing up just feels really grim as I feel like it's pouring out. Sorry for too much info. I'm back at work too and actually leaked onto my light coloured trousers today (shame), luckily I had a long top on to cover it.

Please can you tell me if this is normal for the first and if they will soon get back to normal? I'm dreading trying to get through tomorrow at work having to constantly go to the toilet!

bump. just marking a place to hear advice really. Still haven't had a period yet (15weeks) but been getting some pmt like symptoms and feeling nervous about it. Sorry it's been so grim-hope you're feeling better now!!

Yep, normal in my experience. It's like the whole 5 months worth comes pouring out at once. Confused

I remember my first period after my first baby - I felt so awful I actually took to my bed and I NEVER take to my bed! Really heavy, horrible cramps, felt nauseous and just grim. AFAIK it's normal and when I compared notes with my friends at the time they all nodded and grimaced at the memory. It wasn't anywhere near as bad after I'd had DS2 - not sure why. But just take it easy, clear your calendar for a couple of days, if you can, and make sure you get plenty of iron in your diet.

As far as i remember it was only the first one that was so heavy but probably took over a year to get back to normal frequency.

I was literally about to post about this - DD is 7 months & have just got my first period after stopping expressing. It's really heavy & I feel quite sick & shivery, wasn't sure if it was a coincidental bug. Also first time using a mooncup so was also worried it was related to that!

Erm.... mine returned about 3 months after each baby, and were pretty light. HAve got lighter since, and even more so after 2nd baby.

Thanks for all the replies, looks like this is pretty normal then, except for you bikerunski you lucky thing! Managed to struggle through 10 hours at work today by standing up as little as possible other than running the loo every hour, fingers crossed they get better!
