Pain after gallbladder op

It's been two weeks since I had the dreaded gallbladder out. This morning I had the worst pain ever, I'm sitting in the hospital wondering why I'm in pain when I've had it out. Has anyone else been through this?

Yes I did, had it out on a Friday, went home Saturday, feeling quite reasonable. The following Monday night was in agony all night and ended up back in hospital. The pain was just as bad as I'd had with gallbladder pain. They never found out what the problem was despite having an ultrasound. Was given pain relief via drip and everything settled. I went home the following day and haven't looked back since. Hopefully you will recover and be the same. I have heard of other people who have been readmitted so it doesn't seem to be too uncommon.

I had my gallbladder out in August and now undergoing tests to find out why I still get gallbladder like attacks. My consultant swore blind for a long time that it was just scar tissue and post operative infections. He said come back in 6 months if it's still the same so I did and now thankfully he is taking me seriously.

It's more common than we think sadly. I found the obvious pain relief that I was prescribed made the pain worse in the long term despite it working initially (codeine, oramorph and tramadol). Now I have amertriptileane (sp?) which helps to an extent.

Sorry it's not a positive post as such. I do know people who had one or two attacks and have been lucky since, I just don't fall into that category. I hope they find the cause Thanks

It makes interesting reading for those of us who have problems after gall bladder removal.

Also - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sphincter_of_Oddi_dysfunction - may be worth noting that this is made worse by taking opiate based pain killers, like morphine and codeine.

I had this operation a few years ago and didn't have any problems. Nobody mentioned pain to me. Go back to your GP. Hope you feel better soon.

I have damage caused by the removal of my gallbladder, but even after several bouts of acute pancreatitis, my consultant was apparently 'mystified' by my symptoms. Hmm

I've eventually been referred to a GI specialist, and have an appointment in a few days. I'm going to have a chat about both of those things I've linked to, and hope that this Dr is more knowledgeable than the others I've seen.

Thank you ladies for your replies. I'm at home now the dr at the hospital didn't really give a reason for why it happened. Just trying to be careful with food and I'm going to see my dr about it. Hopefully won't happen again but knowing my luck it will. Hmm

Glad your home. I have gone completely low fat since my surgery, it has improved my situation a bit but not completely. I hope it was just a one off for you

Glad you're home OP - as runway says above, a low fat diet can help, enormously in some cases.

Is there something about, although the gall bladder itself has been removed, there can still be small stones that were on their way out that have to pass through? I seem to remember being warned about something like that although I didn't have it

piscivorous Very small stones can be squeezed out during surgery and cause problems - you can also carry on making stones after removal of the gall bladder...

Hello, yes I can relate two months after surgery I couldn't eat at all I lost half a stone in weight and was in hospital for three days. Look up post cholosectomy. It's when you have gallbladder issues without a gallbladder. Some days I feel like I got the flu it's like my body don't work, if I eat the wrong thing I feel it coming on and it may last hours days even, they said something to me about the possibility before I had surgery but tbh I just wanted to get rid of it because I had infections so much it was mentally draining. I been to the gp they are useless and do is the consultant they tell you to self manage it at home when pain killers don't work apparently it gets better but I know people who have taken three years to get better tbh and do who haven't stopped suffering since. It's all a viscous circle it's mad tbh hope you feel well soon xx
