Trapped nerve in neck

I ended up in hospital the other day. I collapsed as I've not been eating and looking after myself etc. but while I was there the DR noticed I had not sensation in my little finger of my left hand. Now I self harm ( sorry but some of just do) and I have been scared to go to the GP for fear that I'd cut a nerve and would be I loads of trouble. But the DR at the hospital wondered if I had a swollen disc in my neck which was trapping the nerve. I've been studying and feeling low so not caring for myself. Also my DD is growing up fast an eating me out of house and home so have not been eating or putting on the heating (dd hasADHD and does not feel the cold!)
I'm worried as I love to run and knit and like my martial arts. Work has a new round of redundancies and things are looking bleak. I'm worried about my job and my chances of getting another one if I have a dodgy neck. All in all very lonely and worried at the moment. Has anyone else got a trapped nerve and is it as debilitating as some web sites imply?
