Sebaceous cyst

DH has had one on the back of his head for a year or so. GP has been reluctant to remove it as its purely cosmetic.
DH has finally managed to convince them to and is booked in on monday morning. I'm so nervous (he is excited!!).
Does anyone have experience of this and how it will be removed?

My dh had one on the back of his neck removed after 5 years, after much convincing of the doctor - it flared up really painfully about every 18 months and was absolutely gross to look at! He had local anaesthetic and about 5 stitches afterwards plus antibiotics to guard against infection. According to him (I wasn't there, obviously) the doc just dug and dug and pulled and scraped for about 15 mins until he had got it all out. He said it wasn't at all painful. It's all gone now, with just a small scar where it was.

Glad to hear it wasn't painful officelady. DH isn't worried about it at all, think he's just relieved to finally be having it out. I can't stop worrying though!

I've got one on my neck and I want it removed. Might ask the GP about it but I expect they'll say no as its just cosmetic. Might be cosmetic but it smells like cheesy spunk. No one should have to have a cheesy spunk cyst on their neck.

I had one cut out of my back years ago now. It was fine. Very quick. Barely remember it tbh so not traumatic at all.

ots, having it removed by professionals is the way to go.

DH's burst (well DS2 bumped it with his head). DH was crying with the pain, and the stuff that came out was gross. He ended up having to have it scraped out, packed and dressed. It took about 6 months to heal completely.

Mine was cut out for purely cosmetic reasons, viva. It wasn't troubling me at all. I just wanted to be able to wear low backed dresses/tops without the thought of people being able to see it!

Eek at the thought of it bursting by itself. Especially as DS is a bit of a head butter! I'm glad they have agreed to remove it. The original dr he saw was going to, but when DH had his appointment, the dr had broken his hand and no other dr would do it!

YY-you don't want it to burst. Seeing DH crying in the shower, and then again while they scraped it out with no anaesthetic was v upsetting. At one point they were filling the hole with silver nitrate.

It's all about getting the 'sac' out that holds all the gunk. If they don't get that out it can come back.

That sounds awful sparkling!

He said did I want to watch but I can't think of anything worse. Can't stand pus and blood etc. He said he wished he could watch as they were doing it (weirdo!)

I had one removed from my face last year (by a plastic surgeon). I had a local anaesthetic. It took around 15 minutes to remove, and then I had 3 stitches. He has some trouble getting it out as it was stuck and the contents had solidified so he had to enlarge the cut a bit, but it has healed really well. As others have said, the key is to get the whole sac. I initially had a bit of a dip where the lump had been but it had almost gone by 9 months post-surgery.

Yeah he is having a local. His has got a really hard bit in the middle, then spongey bits round the outside. Just thought, wonder if he will need to shave his hair? Or if they will just work around it?

My dh had several on his neck and one on his back. The one on his back was only a couple of years old so came out fine but the neck ones were decades old and took a lot of digging out. He was in some pain afterwards and went to bed for the rest of the day. Very little scarring. I had one on my neck too and got it removed as it got infected regularly and was enormous. Again no problems on removal and a minuscule scar

Forgot to update. He had it out monday and all went well. The doctor showed him the sac, he said it was gross! Has 2 stitches which are being removed on monday. He said the only pain he felt was when he injected the local, and then it was just a strange tugging sensation.

That's great ots. He didn't get the sac to keep as a souvenir then? Bet he feels much better now it's gone.
