Oh heck, I've never had this before. What a horrible feeling. Seen Doctor, given anti biotics, sent sample off as she said there was blood present.
Got cranberry juice and tablets, is there anything else to know?

Have a wee whenever you feel the urge. Don't hold it in. Try to wee before sex and definitely afterwards. Get your parnter to wash his penis before sex, too.

CarmonEileen · 21/03/2014 19:48

Never having sex again Grin
Seriously though, we are always 'clean' before dtd so this is a new one on me.
Thanks for the advice, duly noted. How long does it generally last?

I think it's well treated wih antibiotics, so from when you first take the antibiotics, give it 3 days or so to feel the benefits.

Obviously, make sure you finish the course.

Another trick is to make sure you drink water prior to when you know you'll have sex (not always possible, I know) so that you pee frequently afterwards. Keeping yourself hydrated is important to 'flush' your system of bacteria.

It just happens sometimes; some women are more prone to it for reasons I'm not quite sure of. Hope you feel better soon x Smile

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 21/03/2014 20:18

I'm suffering with a UTI at the moment too. Horrible.

Drink lots and lots, it's important to keep your urine diluted so that it stings less. Helps flush out the infection too.

Look after yourself, keep yourself warm, just as you would with any other nasty infection.

Your anti-biotics should kick in soon, you'll feel better within 24 hours or so.

Weirdly I've just eaten Chilli which DP said was really hot and I could taste nothing but sweet and salt. Could that have anything to do with having a UTI?!!

CarmonEileen · 21/03/2014 21:31

Thank you both so much. Dr said to be very careful keeping an eye on body temp, rigors (?) what are they? and if I have a raised temp to seek further medical attention quickly Shock
I didn't think it was a serious as she made out but perhaps so!

I have drunk a 1.5 litre carton of cranberry juice and pint of water. Just out of the bath, had a wee just before bath and almost cried with the pain. (that last trickle)Sad

You can buy pure cranberry tablets too. I feel for you, more painful than my c-section recovery. I wore a pad and just tried to go in there when u knew it would only be a small (very painful) dribble ! Hard to allow yourself to do! I used to have it all the time but stopped since peeing after sex. Hope you feel better soon.

ScarletStar · 21/03/2014 21:37

When I get cystitis I take a blanket, a pint of water and the laptop into the bathroom with me. Repeatedly fill up the pint glass and pee it out, over and over...

Laptop and blanket just for comfort, obviously. Grin

christine44 · 21/03/2014 21:41

Don't forget to take dome pain killers too and eat something. It's really horrid used to suffer terribly but now drink plenty and always wee after dtd . Take care it will get better

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 21/03/2014 21:44

Oh OP I know how it feels, luckily mine isn't that bad this time, just a dull ache, but I vividly remember the feeling of weeing and dreading it ending because that's when it really hurts.

Lots and lots of water, keep diluting and flushing.

Also Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, together, reduce fever, pain and inflammation.

CarmonEileen · 21/03/2014 21:49

ILove I have some of those cranberry tablets I have taken two with my tea, didn't really feel like eating though to be honest.

I can't take ibuprofen am allergic to that and penicillin, but have taken two paracetamol.
Will most definitely be weeing after dtd from no on (if dh's lucky)Wink
Thank you all so much for helping me out. I have been on hear years but seldom post.
Thanks and Wine for you all.

Scarlet my sister said the same thing to me earlier. Grin

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 22/03/2014 22:20

How you feeling today Carmon? Have the anti-biotics kicked in?

Mine is better than yesterday, I'm still knackered with lower back pain, but the pain on weeing is better (although mine wasn't too severe to begin with)

WillieWaggledagger · 22/03/2014 22:25

Yep I do the same as scarlet. I have to say I don't bother with cranberry any more, just shitloads of water

Hope things are improving OP

CaptainTripps · 22/03/2014 23:07

D Mannose. Get some for next time and keep it in the cabinet.

MichonnesSamuraiSword · 23/03/2014 10:58

I'd never heard of D Mannose, thank you Captain

However, this is only my second ever UTI in 36 years, but both of those have come within a space of a few months. Might be a sign of things to come, so I'll remember D Mannose if it becomes a problem.

CarmonEileen · 23/03/2014 11:34

morning lovely ladies. I don't feel as bad now, anti biotics are just kicking in- im on Trimethoprim. Still stings like a bugger at the end of weeing but not as bad as Friday. A friend has recommended potassium citrate, has anyone used this before?

OP posts:
CarmonEileen · 23/03/2014 11:35

Michonnes I've got to 37 without having one, and am bloody thankful Grin

OP posts:
MichonnesSamuraiSword · 23/03/2014 11:39

I'm on Trimethoprim too - apparently it's a common anti-b for UTIs. My GP felt the need to discuss this with me, as in "Hmm have you had Trimethoprim before? Which anti-b did you have last time?"... Me: "I don't bloody know, you have the screen in front of you, you tell me!!!"

Keep drinking lots and diluting, should help with the stinging - and keep on the Ibuprofen, should help.

I'm feeling a lot better today, but mine was quite a mild case. Still have back pain though, worried about my poor kidneys!

NormHonal · 23/03/2014 11:42

For future reference, you can order antibiotics for cystitis via the Lloyds Pharmacy website. You answer a few questions and, assuming you pass, the prescription can be collected from your nearest store.

This is expensive though, but great for those times when you can't get a GP appointment.

I seem to be getting it more and more as I get older, at the end of periods especially.

WillieWaggledagger · 23/03/2014 12:18

I did get thrush from ABs for cystitis once, so maybe worth making sure you have treatment handy

eurochick · 23/03/2014 12:27

I had bicarbonate of soda in my pints of water. It gave me a dose of the squits but shifted the cystitis.

ToAvoidConversation · 23/03/2014 12:31

It's horrible. Don't drink any more cranberry for a bit, it can really irritate the stomach and vomiting with cystitis is even worse-burning at both ends. Drink lots of water. Last time I had it I spent a lot of time in a hot bath. If you need to pee in the bath then needs must! It will help the burning and you can clean the bath after.

CarmonEileen · 23/03/2014 15:38

Haven't had much cranberry juice today, plenty of water though, shall I carry on with the cranberry tablets or stop? Getting pissed off with the stinging now (pardon the pun) Grin

OP posts:
ToAvoidConversation · 23/03/2014 15:50

I just know I once drank so much cranberry juice I was really sick and ooofft the burning! If its bad seriously just get in the bath, sounds a bit disgusting but it will give you relief. Cranberry tablets can't do as much harm as the juice.

CarmonEileen · 23/03/2014 22:52

I will do Grin . I'm really not feeling so good now. Have awful crampy dull achy pain now. Sad
Will wake the kids if I run a bath now so taken 2 paracetamol and hope to sleep it off.
